Are you feeling jaw discomfort?

Your healthcare professional will typically begin by reviewing your symptoms and examining your jaw. This may include:

-Listening to and feeling your jaw as you open and close your mouth
-Observing your jaw’s range of motion
-Gently pressing around the jaw to identify areas of pain or tenderness
If a problem is suspected, additional tests may be recommended, such as:

Dental X-rays to evaluate your teeth and jaw

A CT scan to provide detailed images of the joint’s bones

An MRI to assess the joint’s disk and surrounding soft tissues

In some cases, TMJ arthroscopy is used to diagnose a TMJ disorder. During this procedure, a thin tube (cannula) is inserted into the joint space, followed by a small camera (arthroscope) that allows your healthcare professional to view the area and make a diagnosis.

TMJ arthroscopy may also be used as a treatment. It can help improve symptoms by releasing scar tissue, removing inflamed soft tissue or debris, and restoring smoother, more comfortable jaw movement.
