A new MRI-based study presented at RSNA 2025 shows a clear link between body composition and brain aging. Higher muscle mass and lower visceral fat were associated with younger-appearing brains, while subcutaneous fat showed no connection to brain age.
Led by senior author Cyrus Raji, M.D., Ph.D., the multi-institutional research includes work from Pacific Neuroscience Institute physicians Somayeh Meysami, M.D., and David A. Merrill, M.D., Ph.D., highlighting PNI’s role in advancing research focused on physical and brain health.
These findings reinforce the importance of preserving muscle while reducing hidden abdominal fat to support long-term cognitive health and lower Alzheimer’s disease risk.
