A new MRI-based study presented at RSNA 2025 shows a clear link between body composition and brain aging. Higher muscle mass and lower visceral fat were associated with younger-appearing brains, while subcutaneous fat showed no connection to brain age.

Led by senior author Cyrus Raji, M.D., Ph.D., the multi-institutional research includes work from Pacific Neuroscience Institute physicians Somayeh Meysami, M.D., and David A. Merrill, M.D., Ph.D., highlighting PNI’s role in advancing research focused on physical and brain health.

These findings reinforce the importance of preserving muscle while reducing hidden abdominal fat to support long-term cognitive health and lower Alzheimer’s disease risk.

Is it time to redefine the "Standard of Care" for Alzheimer's?

New brain health research argues that Multidomain Therapy must become the new gold standard.

After reviewing 23 prospective trials, the data show that targeting multiple biological systems (like inflammation and metabolism) yields effect sizes greater than unimodal therapies, including pharmaceuticals alone.

The Conclusion: Effective treatment requires a comprehensive approach where multidomain interventions are employed widely, early, and first-line.

Co-authors PNI's Dr. Jennifer Bramen and her colleagues say, “Alzheimer’s disease is far too complex for single-target solutions. Multidomain approaches offer a better path forward. Our review shows why they matter for anyone working to improve patient care."

New research in PNAS Nexus highlights a critical link between the oral microbiome and Alzheimer’s risk.

Discussing these findings, PNI’s Dr. Jennifer Bramen, Director of Neuroimaging, notes that while certain oral bacteria are linked to cognitive decline, others actually support memory.

The Key Takeaways:

The Connection: Higher levels of "good" bacteria (Neisseria and Haemophilus) correlate with better attention and memory retention.

The Action Plan: Dr. Bramen recommends a diet rich in nitrate-heavy vegetables to suppress harmful pathogens and support brain health.

12/04/2025

New data from CREST-2 show that for people with severe carotid artery narrowing but no recent stroke symptoms, adding a minimally invasive stent procedure to intensive medical therapy cut stroke risk by more than half compared with medical therapy alone.

Over four years, just 2.8% of patients who received stenting + medical care experienced a stroke — versus 6.0% of those on medical treatment alone.

The results are being hailed as a milestone for stroke prevention, offering new hope for patients at high risk of carotid stenosis and strengthening the case for stenting under the right conditions.
