Are you through a cold and flu season? Are your allergies getting to you? There are common, over-the-corner medications that can affect your milk supply, but there are also breastfeeding-friendly alternatives. How did you manage your allergies, cold, or flu while nursing? .

We have posted on this issue before, but now is a good time to think about it seriously again, given the world climate meeting taking place in Egypt.

Every year 130 million babies are said to be born in the world. A significant proportion are not breastfed at all, and most are not breastfed for what the WHO considers the “ideal” time period. The WHO recommends that mothers breastfeed exclusively for 6 months and continue breastfeeding (along with added food) to the baby's age of two years and beyond.

Why is the fact that very few of the 130 million babies born every year are not fed as the WHO recommends a problem for global warming?

1. Formula is usually made from cow milk which requires large numbers of cows to be raised and fed and much land is taken up for this purpose. Soybeans for formula also "eat" in the form of fertilizers, and harmful pesticides are used in quantity, and acres and acres of land are used to grow soybeans.
2. Transportation of cow milk or soybeans to factories requires energy.
3. Transforming cow milk or soybeans to formula requires energy.
4. Infant formula is packaged with significant amounts of throw away products including plastics to “keep fresh”.
5. Infant feeding bottles are usually made from unrecyclable plastics.
6. The manufacture of the plastics used for packaging of infant formula and bottles require significant amounts of energy.
7. The advertising of infant formula uses large amounts of printed materials sent to mothers. In some countries (including Canada and the US) almost every mother receives this "information" either in the mail, in doctors’ offices, often before even the mother gives birth, or in hospital before discharge.
8. Breastfeeding following the guidelines recommended by the WHO decreases the need for artificial birth control. A mother following the recommendations of the WHO would, on average, without artificial birth control have a baby every 2 to 3 years. This would decrease the yearly births significantly and help control our burgeoning population.

Why are not more mothers breastfeeding according to the WHO guidelines?

There are many reasons, but principally:

1. The medical system undermines mothers’ ability to succeed at breastfeeding their babies.
2. Society’s belief that artificial infant feeding is as good as breastfeeding and pressure on mother not to breastfeed or breastfeed only for a short time, is huge.
3. Advertising of infant formula is also a huge factor.

‘I've been rocking and cuddling my baby to sleep since that day he was born. I mentioned this to a nurse at my clinic recently. She said that she did the same thing with her son, and everyone warned her that she would still have a teenager sleeping in her bed. And then she told me that, a few weeks ago, her teenage son came home from school very upset. He didn't want to talk, and just went to his room and listened to his music, typed on his phone and cried. The mother gave her son space, and night time came and she went to bed. Just as she was about to turn off her side light, the door opened, and her 15 year old padded into the room. He climbed into the bed with her, laid his head on her shoulder and cried. He told her all about the girl that broke his heart, all about the friends who laughed, all about the stresses of being him. She told him about her first broken heart, about friends who'd been cruel, and told him she understands. They talked in the dark for hours, until he feel asleep in her bed. Still sad but relieved after their talk.
'So you see' she said to me, when she finished the story. 'I was so scared that I wound wind up with a teenager who would 'need me' at night, that I never stopped to consider how beautiful that would really be.' 🌟
One of my favourite stories ever. Had to .

Inflammation along with excess histamine is one reason why some poor children with PANS (Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome) or autism suffer from severe anxiety and/or OCD. When you reduce this inflammation along with histamine levels, some children start getting much better. Mirica and Histamine Block (two readily available over-the-counter supplements – no affiliation) can have a remarkable role in helping some of these children. Dr. K
