Do you embrace new experiences with open arms? Or do you tend to cower in fear when change approaches? Both have their benefits, and now scientists have discovered a potential biological basis for these different reactions, primarily in the hippocampus 🧠

To determine the fearless versus fearful birds 🐦 scientists placed a novel object in the feeding dish and observed which ones still approached the dish regardless of the foreign object. Weeks following the behavior testing, scientists observed that the brains of fearless birds were markedly different from those of fearful birds 🧬 More specifically, they expressed different genes in the hippocampus.

Next time you find yourself reacting to change, blame your hippocampus! Find some comfort knowing that your gene expression may have determined your aptitude for change for you 😌

We talk a lot about mindfulness here at Neurovella, especially in the context of meditation, but what exactly is it? 🤔Mindfulness is focused attention on the present moment. It’s natural for our minds to drift from one thought to the next, easily spiraling into what feels like an abyss of endless thoughts and feelings 😶‍🌫️ During a mindfulness practice, we acknowledge the wandering mind without judgment, with a goal of returning back to the present moment.

As the Western World has started integrating ancient practices like meditation and mindfulness into modern medicine, research has shown the beneficial effects of the two on mental health, immune function, aging and cognition, addiction, mental clarity and focus, heart health, confidence, mood, sleep… the list goes on!

A blueberry a day keeps the doctor away 🫐🩺 Well, almost!

Actually, participants in this study were given the equivalent of half a cup of blueberries in powder form. Once a day, the intervention group received the blueberry supplement, while the controls received a placebo, for a period of 12 weeks. The study investigated the effects of daily blueberry supplementation in a middle-aged sample of insulin-resistant participants who had elevated risk for future dementia 📈

Anthocyanins are a plant compound found in the berries, giving them their color and defending them against excess radiation exposure, infectious agents, and other threats. In humans, anthocyanins reduce inflammation, improve metabolic function, and enhance energy production within cells.

The study measured executive abilities and long-term memory, both of which are affected in aging and late-life dementia.

The blueberry-treated group showed improvement in cognitive tasks 🧠 and had lower fasting insulin levels, meaning they had improved metabolic function and were more easily able to burn fat for energy 💪🏼

The hippocampus is a well-known landmark in the brain’s memory map 🗺📍and is closely linked to a variety of diseases of cognitive decline. As we continue to move through Mental Health Awareness Month, however, we’d like to highlight the lesser known role of the hippocampus in emotional regulation😃😢😵😠😔 The hippocampus communicates the emotional context from the amygdala, and it’s highly sensitive to repeated stressful events. Research has revealed smaller hippocampi and amygdala volumes in patients with mental health disorders, including major depressive disorder, PTSD, borderline personality disorder, addiction, and schizophrenia, among others.
