Throughout pregnancy, maternal cortisol crosses the placenta to the fetus, since the fetus cannot produce it independently until later stages of gestation. Maternal cortisol stimulates the secretion of Corticotropin Release Hormone (CRH). CRH stimulates cortisol synthesis which means that high levels of cortisol crossing the placenta in early stages of fetal formation can alter programming of the HPA axis. This leads to the dysregulation of cortisol production in the fetus.
Stress during pregnancy has negative consequences on the fetus and newborn infant. The goal is early identification and prevention of high stress levels that could affect the intrauterine relationship between mother and fetus. This relationship is fundamental for the future health of both.
In babies, dysregulation of cortisol levels can cause symptoms like weakened immune function, belly aches, tiredness, loss of appetite, nausea, dehydration and skin conditions.
In kids, teenagers, and adults, dysregulation can cause symptoms like morning sluggishness, depression, anxiety, weakened immune function, fatigue, loss of resilience in stressful situations, brain fog, cravings for salty or sweet foods, and other vague symptoms.
To provide children with the best start possible, invest in the emotional wellbeing of their mothers before conception, and during and after pregnancy.
