Kaiser Permanente Santa Rosa has decided that starting in January, they will no longer provide 24/7 midwifery care.
This means:
* Sick calls will not be covered by another midwife.
* Maternity leaves will not be covered by another midwife.
* There will be multiple days every week with no midwife present in Labor & Delivery.
This decision was not made with the input of midwives and comes after they voted to unionize.
Research proves that midwifery-led care delivers safer, healthier, more satisfying births:
* Preterm birth rates are 24% lower when care is led by midwives.
* Families cared for by midwives are less likely to need epidurals, instrumental births, or emergency Caesareans, and enjoy higher rates of spontaneous vaginal birth.
* Early miscarriage and newborn death rates are lower in midwifery-led care.
* Cost savings: Midwifery care is consistently linked to reduced healthcare interventions and spending.
* Emotional well-being: People cared for by midwives report greater satisfaction, more control, and positive birth experiences.
* No increase in adverse outcomes for newborns; midwives improve results without compromising safety.
Midwives are more than care providers. They are data-driven, collaborative, holistic partners in health. Many families choose Kaiser specifically for midwifery care. Removing them puts our community’s birth experiences and outcomes at risk.
Please show your support by emailing Patricia.x.hiserote@kp.org about this decision. Please include personal stories of how a midwife at Kaiser Permanente Santa Rosa impacted your birth, or if it will impact your decision to birth there in the future.
These midwives are skilled, collaborative, intelligent, and compassionate care providers and our community needs them.
