The Santo Domingo Pueblo, also known as Kewa, is the largest pueblo, situated along the Rio Grande consisting of 6,000+ members that possess a very traditional way of life. The community still practices their native culture dating back before the Spaniards. The community members speak Keres which is the primary language, and still dress traditionally during pueblo activities.
Santo Domingo Pueblo is a non-gaming tribe, and the pueblo leadership has taken an active role in monitoring and managing their health programs and schools. Within 6 years, the pueblo has built a Safety Complex building which houses the EMS program and the Early Childhood Development Center which enrolls children beginning at 2 months up to 5 or 6 years of age.
The original Santo Domingo Health Clinic, operated by the Indian Health Services, was located in the pueblo, which was 1500 sq. ft. Limited ambulatory care services were provided and often limited about 15 patients in the morning and afternoon. The Santo Domingo Health Center was built and completed in 2006 by the Santo Domingo Pueblo.
In November 2011, the Kewa Pueblo Health Corporation was awarded a P.L. 93-638, Indian Self Determination Contract from the Indian Health Service. With the award of the contract, KPHC has management oversight of the Health Center. As part of the contract, additional services have been added included: Laboratory, Information Technology, SDPI, Optometry, Business Office, Finance, Human Resources, CHS, Transportation services, and Security.
The Health Center is currently in it’s third expansion where it will be adding 37,000 square feet and additional services.
