Water safety is a serious matter, but the good news is that water-related emergencies are highly preventable when we are equipped with the right knowledge. Ensuring the safety, health, and growth of children is at the heart of everything we do. Whether your family is enjoying a backyard pool right here in the OKC area or heading out on a summer vacation, we want to empower you with the tools to keep your little ones safe.
Please take a moment to learn and practice these 5 Essential Rules of Water Safety:
1. Designate a "Water Watcher"
Always have a dedicated, undistracted adult actively supervising children in or near water. Put away the phones, books, and other distractions until it's someone else's turn to watch.
2. Install Proper Barriers
If you have a pool at home, ensure it is completely enclosed by a four-sided fence (at least 4 feet high) with a self-closing, self-latching gate.
3. Teach Swim Skills Early
Enroll children in age-appropriate, formal swimming lessons. Teaching them basic water survival skillsโlike how to float and reach the wallโadds a critical layer of protection.
4. Use Approved Life Jackets
For inexperienced swimmers or when enjoying open water, always use U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets. Avoid relying on air-filled floaties or toys, which can easily deflate or slip off.
