Fire alarm goes off on site: what should your crew do next?

Use this quick checklist:
1) Stop work immediately.
2) If it’s safe, shut down equipment/tools (do not delay evacuation).
3) Evacuate using the nearest safe exit route: do not run, do not go back for gear.
4) Go straight to the designated muster point.
5) Supervisor/lead takes accountability: roll call/headcount and verify visitors/contractors.
6) Assign one person to call 911 (or site emergency number) and provide: address, entry gate, what you see/smell, and who is missing (if anyone).
7) Do NOT silence or reset the alarm: only authorized personnel/emergency responders.
8) No re-entry until the ALL CLEAR is given.

Quick cold-weather reminder for the jobsite:
• Skip cotton (it holds moisture and chills fast)
• Start with a moisture-wicking base layer
• Add an insulating mid-layer, then a wind/water-resistant outer layer
• If someone’s sweating, they’re already setting up for trouble once they slow down

Active shooter drills aren't just for offices: how do you adapt “Run, Hide, Fight” to an open-air construction site?

Construction jobsites are loud, open, and constantly changing: which means your response plan can’t be a copy/paste from an office template.

A few jobsite-specific things to think through:
• RUN: Where are your fastest exits when fencing, trenches, or equipment block normal paths?
• HIDE: What are your “hard cover” options on YOUR site today (not last week)?
• FIGHT: If you’re forced to defend yourself, do crews understand this is last resort: and what that really means?

Also consider: muster points that don’t funnel people into the same area, clear stop-work signals, and how you’ll communicate when hearing protection and machinery noise make shouting useless.

If you don’t train for the environment you actually work in, your plan may fail when it matters most.
