Infirmary Health and LifeSouth Community Blood Centers are hosting an emergency blood drive at Mobile Infirmary, on Tuesday, August 6 from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Infirmary Health hospitals rely on LifeSouth and LifeSouth blood donors to make sure blood is available to patients suffering from traumas, cancers, and chronic illnesses. Blood donations have declined during the summer months and blood usage has increased. This issue has been compounded by the recent cyber-attack on a large blood center in the southeast causing an emergency need for blood.LifeSouth is now asking those who do not regularly donate, have not donated in a while, or are first-time donors to make a point to do so now. Frequent blood donors are strongly encouraged to come in and bring a friend. All blood types are needed and accepted, especially type O and platelet donations. All blood donors will receive a $25 e-gift card that can be redeemed at hundreds of retailers and restaurants. If a donor gives a double red cell donation or a platelet donation, they will receive a $45 e-gift card for their generosity. In addition to an e-gift card, donors will receive refreshments and a mini-physical.Schedule an appointment at www.lifesouth.org.

Christopher Southwood, M.D., recently spoke to FOX10 News during the Making Rounds segment about stroke risk factors and the increases of stroke in younger individuals.

Risk factors can include:
🧠 Smoking/vaping
🧠 Increased sedentary lifestyle
🧠 High blood pressure
🧠 Diabetes
🧠 High cholesterol
🧠 Obesity

Your annual appointment with primary care provider is your first line of defense in assessing and mitigating risk factors for stroke. Find a physician near you at infirmaryhealth.org/doctors

Knowing the signs of a stroke can help improve outcomes, by initiating access to treatment urgently. Use the simple acronym, BEFAST for stroke, and call 911.

B - Balance loss
E - Eye blurriness
F - Facial weakness
A - Arm weakness
S - Speech problems
T - Time to call 911!

Dr. Southwood is board-certified in neuro-critical care and is fellowship-trained in stroke neurology and endovascular surgical neuroradiology.

Bone loss is the amount of minerals, such as calcium, that your body absorbs (takes) from your bones. Some of the most common reasons for bone loss include not getting enough calcium from food or you are past menopause. Significant bone loss can lead to Osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a bone disease that develops when bone mineral density and bone mass decreases. Although osteoporosis mostly affects older women, it can affect men and women at any age.

It’s never too early to take steps for prevention!
