6 Tips for home bound seniors
In many households, loving spouses are caring for their aging partner. Many seniors have family stop by to help. Sometimes an unexpected health issue prompts us to take action because life changes in the blink of an eye.
Here are 6 ways home bound seniors can improve everyday life:
1. Hobbies.
Maintaining cherished hobbies are important, and there’s always the thrill of exploring new things to discover a hidden talent or entertainment value. Even if you have to adapt to paint a picture, play an instrument, bake, or play a card game, it’s worth every effort you invest into it.
Added bonus: you can get into “the zone” while working on your hobby. It helps to sharpen mental skills and stimulate brain function. Not to mention being in “the zone” helps you to escape and not notice time as much. “the zone” is your happy place.
2. Read
Getting lost in a good story is priceless. Whether you are the reader or the listener, stories captivate our hearts and minds. You may find you enjoy a good audio book, and most are free through your public library card. Speaking of libraries, when was the last time you went? There’s nothing like being in a library if you are able. Sometimes quiet trips just to get out once in a while are ideal. Be sure to enjoy a cup of coffee while you’re out!
3. Music
We all have our favorite albums, records, or for today’s style, music mix lists you can listen to anywhere. They say music soothes the savage beast, and we agree. It works! The next time you’re having a bad day, turn on your favorite sounds and prove us wrong! We bet you can’t.
Added bonus: sharing our music with others brings us great joy. Having a companion to share it with is priceless. Songs speak to us and can raise our oxytocin levels, the feel good hormones.
4. Playing a game
Board games, cards, trivia, cross word puzzles, and online games promote healthy brain function, which is especially important as we age. Studies have shown playing Tetris right after a traumatic event can rewire your brain to cope easier. We should all take the time to invest in our mental strength, at all ages.
Fun outing: board game cafes are opening all over the US. They offer 1000’s of boardgames and food and beverages. It’s a low key place to go and try something new. You might even meet new friends!
5. Food
We all lived through the COVID lockdowns of 2020. When you are home and can’t get out, food matters. Having a delicious meal is one of the best parts of being human. Having a good cook around, or cooking it yourself with assistance or without, will help your self esteem, and curb that craving you’ve been having!
6. Encouragement
Many home bound individuals can easily fall into a depression. Having a companion to suggest activities, makes us more likely to join in. We are less likely to start anything new when we are alone. Having a caregiver give us one on one care and companionship will bring back the spice of life you’ve been looking for!
