Everything is coming together! We've got the skills, the team, and the passion - now we just need the funding! My apprentice has been helping me look deeper into some rare and chronic illnesses. Here's what she said:

"As someone with a chronic illness, I can easily say, the entire medical/healthcare system is against us and never seems to give us what we need to address the root of our problems. My boss and mentor is fixing that.

"Why has no one shown me this before?"

Today is and it has me reflecting on the past few days. This year's focus is all about promoting the power of diversity to build a strong community no matter where you are. We're on our way to true inclusion in the world.

Just yesterday, I had the privilege to work with an African-American client living in a poor environment. She was struggling with various health concerns, but her main issue was her arms. She described a sort of paresis and tingling sensation that had persisted for a long time. After seeing both doctors and physical therapists, she just said nothing they do ever really helps. She tried it all: exercises, stretches, medication, Gabapentin- she does all this stuff and nothing is helping.
I looked at her and watched her walk for about 3 seconds before I knew exactly what was wrong with her. We jumped into our treatment plan and I used percussive therapy on her, and within minutes, she could move her arm without any pain or sensation of paresis. After only knowing each other for about 10 minutes, she started crying in front of me asking why no one had done this for her till now. The simple answer lies in the definition of Occupational Therapy. Everyday, we do things that no other health professional can. We change lives. We strengthen the community. And thats what World OT Day is all about.

To all my OT friends: Never let them undervalue you. Your work is critical for the community AND the individual.

In order to leave Cuba during the exodus in the 60s, a family member of mine attempted su***de after spending time doing hard labor for the Castro regime. My ancestors sacrificed a lot to find a better life. Su***de and depression have ALWAYS been a problem. We just see it more now.

Vascular Ehlers Danlos Syndrome is the most severe form of EDS in which the COL3A1 gene has mutated and causes the skin, arteries, muscles, organs, and anything else with collagen to be extremely fragile. There is no cure, but that won't stop me from researching the most effective treatment plans to manage symptoms and fight for equity!
