Sometimes that looks like overworking, zoning out, or snapping at the people we love, and while those reactions may not be helpful, they are signs that our nervous system is doing what it knows how to do.

The good news? We can give it better tools. Here are a some healthy coping skills that are realistic and powerful:

• Name what you’re feeling
• Hold something cold or textured
• Set a 5-minute boundary before reacting
• Look at a calming photo or symbol
• Focus on one sense at a time
• Try bilateral movement (like walking or tapping)
• Do a 3x3 grounding check-in (see, hear, feel)
• Brain dump your thoughts for 5 minutes
• Text a “safe person” a quick emoji check-in
• Ask yourself: “What brings me closer to who I want to be?”

Healing starts by making small shifts toward safety, regulation, and compassion. You don’t have to do it alone. 💛

Just because you’re technically safe right now doesn’t always mean your body feels safe.

In trauma recovery, we begin to understand that real safety means there’s no current threat, while perceived safety is when your body and mind can truly relax.

Your nervous system might still be on high alert, especially if safety hasn’t always been a part of your story.

Healing is about gently helping your body learn what safety actually feels like for you.
