When couples argue, timeouts can feel like avoidance. But done right, they're one of the best tools for de-escalation.

Dr. Davenport shared his approach to structured timeouts in couples therapy in a new article on Psychologist Brief. The key is a specific time and a guaranteed return — that's what separates a productive pause from stonewalling.

Kids don’t come to you and say, “I think I need to talk to a psychologist.”

They stop sleeping. They pick fights with siblings over nothing. They cry at drop-off when they used to walk in fine. They say their stomach hurts every Sunday night. They get quiet in a way that doesn’t feel like growing up — it feels like shutting down.

Parents often second-guess themselves here. “Is this just a phase?” Sometimes it is. But when the changes stick around for weeks, when they start affecting school or friendships or family life, that’s your signal.

A few things worth watching for:
— Sudden changes in appetite, sleep, or energy
— Social withdrawal from friends they used to enjoy
— Emotional reactions that seem way out of proportion
— Physical complaints with no medical explanation
— A noticeable drop in grades or school engagement

You don’t need to have it figured out before you call. That’s literally what a child psychologist is for — to help sort out what’s going on and whether intervention would help.

Our Sarasota and Venice offices see children and adolescents for both therapy and comprehensive psychological testing.

Children don't always have the words for what they're feeling. So they show you instead.

When a child is struggling emotionally, it rarely looks like an adult sitting down and saying "I think I need help." Instead, you might notice withdrawal from friends or activities they used to enjoy, increased irritability or meltdowns that seem disproportionate, trouble sleeping or nightmares, declining grades or school avoidance, frequent stomachaches or headaches with no medical explanation, or regressing to younger behaviors.

None of these signs alone means something is wrong. But a pattern — especially one that persists for more than a couple of weeks — is worth paying attention to.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, nearly one in five children in the U.S. lives with a mental health condition, and the average delay between symptom onset and treatment is eight to ten years. Early identification changes outcomes.

If you're a parent in Venice or Sarasota noticing changes in your child, trust your instincts. Our doctoral-level child psychologists are trained to help kids make sense of what they're experiencing — in ways that meet them where they are.

From the outside, high-functioning anxiety looks like success.

The person who never misses a deadline. The parent who volunteers for everything. The professional whose calendar is color-coded and whose house is spotless. From the outside, it looks like someone who has it all together.

On the inside, it's a different story: relentless self-doubt, constant overthinking, difficulty saying no, physical exhaustion masked by caffeine and willpower, and a persistent fear that if you slow down, everything will fall apart.

High-functioning anxiety isn't a clinical diagnosis — it's a pattern. And it's one that often goes unrecognized precisely because the person experiencing it appears to be thriving. The American Psychological Association notes that anxiety disorders frequently go untreated when symptoms don't match what people expect anxiety to look like.

Productivity isn't the same as peace. If the engine driving your success is fear, that's worth paying attention to.

Our psychologists in Sarasota work with high-achieving adults who are ready to find a better way forward. More on this topic coming to our blog in July.

Spring in Southwest Florida doesn't look like it does up north — but the transitions are just as real.

Snowbird friends head home. Social circles shrink overnight. Routines that worked all winter suddenly feel empty. The heat starts creeping in, and with it comes a shift in energy that catches people off guard.

Seasonal transitions — even the ones we look forward to — carry an emotional weight. Changes in routine, social connection, and even daylight patterns can quietly affect mood, motivation, and sleep.

If you've noticed a dip in how you're feeling as the season shifts, you're not imagining it. Our Sarasota and Venice offices are here year-round for the families and individuals who call Southwest Florida home.

Dr. Davenport recently sat down with Featured.com for an in-depth interview about his approach to therapy, couples counseling, and what he sees most often in his practice at Davenport Psychology.

Topics include how he works with couples managing anxiety and depression together, what happens when trauma triggers surface in relationships, and why he encourages clients to ditch the therapy-speak and be more direct with each other.

Perfectionism isn't about having high standards. It's about what happens inside you when those standards aren't met — and the toll that takes over time.

Research shows perfectionism is rising across generations, with socially prescribed perfectionism (the belief that others demand perfection from you) showing the steepest increase and the strongest link to anxiety and depression.

The psychology behind perfectionism reveals three distinct patterns: self-oriented, other-oriented, and socially prescribed. Each one affects your mental health differently — and each responds to targeted, evidence-based treatment.

Our latest article breaks down the research, explains when perfectionism crosses from healthy striving into clinical territory, and covers the approaches psychologists use to help clients break free.

Anxiety doesn't present the same way in everyone, and treating it like one thing is part of why some people don't get better.

For one person, it's generalized worry — a constant low-grade hum of dread about things that haven't happened yet. For another, it's a racing heart and shallow breathing in social situations. For someone else, it's an overwhelming need to avoid specific places, people, or experiences.

Generalized anxiety, social anxiety, panic disorder, OCD — these are different conditions with different treatment approaches. A psychologist trained in evidence-based anxiety treatment can help you figure out which one you're actually dealing with, instead of trying to white-knuckle your way through a generic coping strategy.

Our Venice and Sarasota psychologists work with adults and adolescents experiencing all forms of anxiety. We use CBT, ACT, and exposure therapy — approaches backed by decades of clinical research.

Knowing what kind of anxiety you have is the first real step toward managing it.

Anxiety affects roughly 40 million American adults every year — making it the most common mental health condition in the country. But there's a real gap between experiencing anxiety and knowing when it's time to see a psychologist.

Normal anxiety comes and goes. It's tied to specific situations and helps you stay alert. But when worry becomes persistent, disproportionate, and starts interfering with your work, relationships, or daily life — that's when professional help makes a difference.

Signs it may be time to talk to a psychologist:
→ You're avoiding situations, places, or people because of anxiety
→ Physical symptoms like racing heart, muscle tension, or insomnia won't quit
→ You can't turn off the worry even when you know it's irrational
→ You're relying on avoidance or substances to cope

The good news? Anxiety disorders are among the most treatable conditions in psychology. Evidence-based approaches like CBT, ACT, and exposure therapy have effectiveness rates of 60-80% or higher.

Our latest article covers the types of anxiety we treat, what evidence-based treatment actually looks like, and what to expect at your first appointment.
