I recently tried the "Endo-In DMEK" created by Lions World Vision Institute for a patient with Fuchs Corneal Dystrophy that needed a corneal transplant- and I was super impressed how easy it was! Not only is the corneal graft precut, prestamped, preloaded, but it is also loaded in the correct orientation so that you don't have to 'tap-dance' to get it to open. πŸ‘οΈπŸ’ƒπŸ™Œ

Here's a video of my first case - the tissue unfolded beautifully, while one of my favorite songs was playing in the background- 'Firestone' by Kygo. 🎡😍 Many thanks to our outstanding OR staff for their support and excitement whenever we do something new!

I recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Dr. Brandon Ayres to dive into the essential role of a "Crosslinking Quarterback" in my practice. πŸŽ™οΈπŸˆπŸ‘οΈ

We talked about how this key team member (Mikelle) takes the lead in the crosslinking process, ensuring patients receive seamless, top-notch care from start to finish. πŸ’Όβœ¨ From coordinating insurance pre-authorizations to keeping comanaging doctors in the loop, she handles it all! As I mention here, it is SO important that this person understands and believes in the importance of this procedure - and I feel very fortunate that Mikelle is the perfect person for the job! πŸ₯° πŸ™

Thank you to Glaukos and Dr. Ayres for inviting Mikelle and I to talk about how we work together to ensure that these young patients get the surgery that they need to preserve the best possible vision.

What an incredible 2nd Annual Meeting of Keratoplasty Alliance International (KAI) last weekend at AAO!! πŸ‘ Dr. Esen Akpek and I started this organization a few years ago with the following goals:

1. Raise awareness about the global burden of corneal blindness 🎀

2. Create a platform for partnership among corneal surgeons, eyebanks, and industry worldwide 🀝

3. Support and promote research related to increasing the availability of corneal tissue πŸ”¬

We were thrilled to present our first Claes H. Dohlman Research Grant to Dr. Leyla Yavuz Saricay for her project "Investigating Concurrent Limbal Stem Cell Deficiency in Patients with Neurotrophic Keratopathy". Bravo! πŸŽ‰

I am so excited for what the future holds - this is just the start! Please reach out if you have an interest in global corneal blindness- we would love to get you involved! --> keratoplastyalliance.org

I really enjoyed discussing J&J's new "Full Visual Range" lens used for cataract surgery, the Tecnis Odyssey, with this all-star panel last week: Dr. Blake Williamson, Dr. Jeremy Kieval, Lori Tierney (President, JNJ Vision Americas) and Dr. Luis Vargas (JNJ Vision, Head of Clinical Science). πŸ‘ We all flew to Philadelphia to record this live webcast together, which was streamed to different locations around the country.🎬 I always have a blast with this crew - we shared our pearls of wisdom...and lots of laughs! πŸ˜…

Ophthalmology is certainly a special field where surgeons and industry are constantly working together to advance and optimize our current technologies. This was the first time that I was closely involved in the launch of a new intraocular lens used for cataract surgery- and it's so exciting ! Many thanks to BMC for coordinating the logistics and hosting us at their studio πŸ’™

🌟 July is Dry Eye Awareness Month! 🌟

Dry eye disease can significantly impact your quality of life, but early recognition and treatment can make all the difference. It’s essential to be aware of the symptomsβ€”like stinging, burning, or a gritty feelingβ€”and to take action before the condition worsens.

I was thrilled to participate in a Satellite Media Tour in NYC earlier this month, connecting with news stations across the country to discuss dry eye symptoms and treatments. It was amazing to see so much interest and receive such thoughtful questions from the news anchors and audience.

I also want to shine a spotlight on SjΓΆgren's Syndrome, an autoimmune condition affecting 1 in 10 dry eye patients. Patients with chronic, intractable dry eye disease should be evaluated for possible autoimmune disease. The eye is truly the window into the whole body! πŸ‘οΈπŸ’™

May is Mental Health Awareness Month- and this year's theme is "Movement: Moving more for our mental health".πŸƒβ€β™€οΈ

I couldn't agree more- I truly believe that exercise is the best medicine of all.πŸ’Š Whether its cardio, strength training, or my favorite- yoga, I try to incorporate exercise into my daily schedule.πŸ—“οΈ It doesn't always happen, as everyone in the healthcare industry knows that our days can be unpredictable. But I'm happy if it happens at least half the time!

Regular physical activity greatly enhances mental health, reducing the risk of anxiety, depression, and burnout. Personally, I find that it makes me the best version of myself both at home and work. Anyways, I need to stay active to keep up with 2 crazzzyyyy toddlers! 🀣

In the March issue of CRST (Cataract and Refractive Surgery Today), I presented a case study about a patient who presented to me for refractive surgery with high astigmatism in both eyes.🏈 A thorough examination and imaging is required before every surgery, because you may find surprises that are not obvious with a just a slit lamp exam!😱 Also, these case studies usually demonstrate that medicine is both a science and art- there are multiple ways to solve a problem (in this case, getting rid of glasses).🎨

Check out this article to find out what I decided to do for this patient, along with the perspectives of Dr. Frank Price and Dr. Kanika Agarwal.🀝

Check out this article I wrote earlier this year with my husband and colleague, Dr. Joaquin De Rojas, on YMDC Bookmarked titled: "Building a Cohesive Approach to OSD in a High Volume Surgical Practice". This article goes through our protocol at Center for Sight and shares some of our best practices for optimizing the ocular surface before any anterior segment surgery πŸ“. I hope all new surgeons early in their career can learn from it. A question that patients often ask me: 'how does LASIK surgery affect my future cataract surgery?" πŸ€”

First of all- you can still get cataract surgery whether or not you had LASIK.βœ… Everyone needs cataract surgery at some point.πŸ‘ However, calculating the specific power of the lens to implant can be a little tricker after LASIK, because the cornea is shaped differently.πŸ‘οΈ Therefore, we advise most patients who have had previous LASIK/PRK/RK to get the 'Light Adjustable Lens' for the best flexibility afterwards to 'tweak' any residual prescription afterwards.πŸ’ͺ

In addition, I'm always extra careful to treat potential dry eye and/or neurotrophic keratitis in cataract patients who have had previous eye surgery. Patients definitely understand the concept of first optimizing the health of their eye before any other surgery. πŸ€πŸ’™
