October 10 is World Mental Health Day. Mental Health isn't a diagnosis, or absence of a diagnosis, it's a state of being that's well or unwell, stable or unstable, clear or agitated, like having a cold, but showing different symptoms of illness. 13% of the world is known to have significant mental health and/or substance abuse issues. That's just diagnosed ones so I expect it's actually much higher. The truth really is that EVERYONE, has mental health breakdowns and they fluctuate with circumstances, time, and whether they receive attention or not. Yoga Therapy's interventions of mindfulness, breath control, relaxation, appropriate physical release, and meditation are known to be highly effective.
The World Health Organization defines good mental health as occurring with the following:
1. the ability to learn and to listen
2. the abilities to feel, manage, and appropriately express and communicate, without harm, the range of emotions
3. the abilities to form and sustain healthy, positive relationships
4. the abilities to cope and manage change and uncertainty
I hope you'll join me in bringing awareness, and treatment, to this chronic and expanding societal problem.
Where a green ribbon this month. Seek ways to rise beyond merely surviving and coping, and thrive amidst uncertainty and change.
Like physical health, when we see mental health as states of being requiring ongoing regulation then we will begin to talk about our mental state with the same acceptance as we do our physical imbalances. ONly then will we be ready for real improvement.
