As leaders in food addiction recovery, we've recently been asked to share our stance on GLP-1 medications. Here's the quick truth, in a message from our owner, Amanda Leith...
"GLP-1 medications seem to be everywhere right now, and I want to be clear about how we hold them within a food addiction recovery model. If you haven’t heard of them, think of semaglutide (Ozempic) or related meds as the “new kid” in the weight-loss neighborhood, showing up with big promises and making everyone curious.
At SHiFT, we get it. New tools are exciting! But as someone who’s been through the cycle — trying every diet, plan, surgery, and yes, even GLP-1s — I’ve learned a hard truth: none of them work long-term if addiction is the real issue underneath.
At SHiFT, our stance isn’t anti–GLP-1. It’s pro-recovery.
GLP-1s can be powerful tools. For some, they reduce cravings and create space between urge and action — and that is huge! But when food addiction is present, they address the physical symptoms, not the full disease. The mental, emotional, and spiritual work still needs attention.
When tools are offered without screening for food addiction or naming the need for recovery work, people are often set up to repeat the same cycle — with more shame and less hope.
At SHiFT, our message is simple: These are tools, not a cure. They can be a support for recovery, not a substitute for it."
If GLP-1s are something you’re curious about, considering, or already using, you don’t have to sort that out alone! These are important conversations, and they deserve honesty, compassion, and realistic expectations. Above all, we want recovery — not shame — at the center of the conversation 🤍
