After routine screening revealed bilateral implant ruptures from a prior surgery not performed by our practice, the patient chose to remove her 10-year-old silicone implants and replace them with new silicone implants, along with a mastopexy (breast lift).
Silicone implant ruptures can be asymptomatic (“silent ruptures”) and often require imaging for detection. The FDA recommends MRI or ultrasound screening starting 5–6 years after implantation and every 2–3 years thereafter. Early detection allows for timely implant removal and helps reduce potential complications.
