Have you ever heard of Thermography or thermal imaging?! 🧐

Mammograms are the gold standard. With modern techniques, the mammogram is wrong 30% of the time, 15% false positives (it was not cancer but they flagged it as possibly being cancer), and 15% false negatives (a cancer was missed). Importantly, it delivers ionizing radiation annually to sensitive tissues. Dense breast tissue can obscure lesions and require more X-rays and even biopsies.

Another type of breast screening is thermography. For this a referral is not required. Thermography is digital photography in the range of the heat spectrum. No radiation is used, no touching or discomfort of any kind. Computer images are transmitted to specially trained MD’s who do the readings. After a baseline of 2 tests, 3 months apart, annual screening is recommended. Since thermography is not considered a “medical procedure” it is also not usually covered by health insurance.

The special value of thermography is in identifying very early stages of tumor development. Developing malignancies need a blood supply. New blood vessels light up on a thermogram, indicating suspicious cellular activity in the breast. Knowledgeable health practitioners can often help a patient head off a cancer in the early stages.

Both tests have value, both tests are available. Utilized together they correctly identify cancer 98% of the time!
