In observance of the upcoming July 4th holiday, Functional Medicine Florida will be closed from Thursday, July 4th, and reopen on Monday, July 8th. We hope you have a safe and healthy holiday filled with joy and celebration.
Here are 7 tips to help you enjoy a healthy & happy July 4th:
🇺🇸 Stay Hydrated: With summer temperatures rising, it’s crucial to stay hydrated. Aim to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day, and more if you’re active or spending time in the sun. Adding a slice of lemon or cucumber to your water can make it more refreshing and help you stay on track.
🇺🇸 Sun Protection: Protecting your skin from the sun is essential. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, and reapply every two hours or after swimming or sweating. Wear protective clothing, such as long-sleeved shirts, hats, and sunglasses, and seek shade during the peak sun hours of 10 AM to 4 PM.
🇺🇸 Healthy BBQ Choices: Enjoying a BBQ doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice your health. Choose lean proteins like grilled chicken, turkey burgers, or fish. Incorporate plenty of colorful vegetables by grilling skewers of bell peppers, zucchini, and cherry tomatoes. For a healthier twist on traditional sides, try making a quinoa salad or using Greek yogurt instead of mayonnaise in your coleslaw.
🇺🇸 Mindful Eating: Holiday gatherings often lead to overeating. Practice mindful eating by paying attention to your hunger and fullness cues. Start with smaller portions, chew your food slowly, and savor each bite. This not only aids digestion but also helps prevent overeating.
🇺🇸 Stay Active: Physical activity is a great way to balance out holiday indulgences. Organize a game of beach volleyball, take a long walk, or go for a swim. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate activity to keep your energy levels up and your metabolism active.
🇺🇸 Healthy Snacking: Instead of reaching for chips and cookies, prepare healthy snacks like fresh fruit, nuts, and homemade trail mix. These options provide essential nutrients and keep you feeling full longer.
🇺🇸 Mental Well-being: Holidays can sometimes be stressful. Take time to relax and unwind. Practice deep breathing exercises, meditate, or simply take a few moments to appreciate the festivities around you. Staying mentally balanced is just as important as physical health.
Wishing you a wonderful & healthy Fourth of July!
