Cultures around the world have developed unique traditions to mourn the departed. These are a few things worn by Victorian Mourners.

From using the departed’s hair in jewelry to wearing ivory rings and adorning their attire with black ribbons, these customs were believed not only to honor the deceased but also to help prevent further death within the family or community.

In 1923, just two years before we began operating out of our main location on North Orange Avenue, Calvin N. Payne donated land he had purchased in downtown Sarasota to the city, creating what we now know as Payne Park!

The public space came to life through a “community work day,” where carpenters, bricklayers, painters, and even local businesspeople joined forces to help shape the park. It became home to Sarasota’s first radio station, and the baseball diamond brought major league baseball to town.

Payne Park is still a beloved community space, now featuring tennis courts, a skate park, and walking paths.

Just like humans, pets can grieve too. For many animals that experience the loss of their owner, they will be going on a grief journey like many other loved ones in their life. Although they may not be able to express these feelings aloud, they are still experiencing a loss.

Lantern releases are a powerful way to say goodbye to a loved one. This activity brings friends and family together in their grief as each light is released in honor of the person they are mourning.

It’s best to use biodegradable or eco-friendly lanterns while lighting up the sky to ensure the lanterns will not damage our environment. Celebrate life with us: https://bit.ly/CelebrationsOfLife

Davie Worchester completed his home on Bird Key in 1914, two years after the passing of his wife and the establishment of Sarasota’s first funeral home. He built the mansion and named it “New Ezdell” after his late wife’s family home in Scotland, adorning the walls with paintings of the original Ezdell Castle.

Eventually, Bird Key was purchased by John Ringling and later by the Arvida Corporation, and the property became what is now the Bird Key Yacht Club.

The Palm Tree Playhouse, previously the Park Seventh Movie House, Garden Theatre and Art Theatre, was established in 1950 by Stuart Lancaster just two years after the Toale brothers purchased Sarasota’s first funeral home.

It was adorned with the traditional theatre masks “comedy and tragedy” and was the first to use the TUDOR or projecting stage set up in performance and operated until the 1960s. You can still visit the building in the now “Gompertz Theatre” acquired by Florida Studio Theatre.

We’re Here For You

Toale Brothers Funeral Home is proud to have served Sarasota and Bradenton and its citizens for three generations as a local family owned and operated business. From 1912 till now, we have been here to guide you through the most difficult moments in your life. Ever since we opened our gates we have approached life (and death) differently. While some just see the end of a loved one’s life as a time for grief and mourning, we prefer to think of it as a time for reflection, appreciation and even celebration. Our well-established Pre-Need program has allowed for consumers to plan ahead for a loved one or themselves and provides a great sense of comfort to those families wishing to pre-plan final arrangements. The entire Toale family is thankful to be serving your family in the community we know and love.
