In 1948, the same year George and Jack Toale purchased our funeral home, fifth graders in Sarasota became part of the local Snake Club. It was founded by the father of Marie Proctor, a young girl who was bitten by a snake while waiting for the school bus. Sadly, she had to have her leg amputated as a result of what was believed to a rattlesnake bite.

To prevent something like this from happening to anyone else, her father created the Sarasota Snake Club to teach children which snakes were poisonous and how to identify the nonpoisonous reptiles that are natural helpers in our environment.

In honor of the approaching Veterans Day, we’re shedding light on our local military cemetery, Sarasota National Cemetery. It’s a place where veterans, their spouses and other eligible family members can be laid to rest.

Today is , and it is celebrated by several different religions.

It is believed to be a time to come together and remember loved ones, helping them peacefully transcend to heaven. Often, those celebrating gather for a Mass and light candles to honor the departed. It is a way for the community to come together in mourning and remembrance of lives lost.

In 1948, George and Jack Toale purchased our town’s first funeral home, just six years after Sarasota and Manatee counties completed the airport in 1942. The space was leased to the Army Air Forces during World War II, and in 1944, National Airlines began operating services out of our airport. Guests continued to use the wooden terminal pictured for another ten years until a new terminal was built, and the airport continued to expand.
