💙 Do you or a loved one have untreated or recurrent squamous cell skin cancer, also known as cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma?

You may be eligible to participate in a new clinical study with Sarasota Memorial’s Kolschowsky Research and Education Institute, aimed at evaluating whether adding cemiplimab — an investigational immunotherapy drug — before surgery leads to better outcomes than the current standard of care.

💬 “For people at high risk of the squamous cell carcinoma coming back, additional treatment with drugs that boost the immune system to detect and eliminate cancer cells, such as cemiplimab, may help lower the chances of the cancer recurring,” said Sarasota Memorial head and neck surgeon Peter Vosler, MD, PhD, FACS, principal investigator of the local study and member of Sarasota Memorial’s Brian D. Jellison Cancer Institute.

❤️ As American Heart Month comes to a close, Sarasota Memorial’s heart team is reflecting on how far cardiac care has come, and the work still ahead.

Despite advances in cardiac care and rapid intervention, heart disease remains the #1 killer of men and women, with arrhythmias, hypertension and heart failure now driving a growing share of heart-related deaths.

💬 “We’ve made tremendous strides in getting patients through that first, critical cardiac event,” said Jonathan Hoffberger, DO, chief of cardiovascular surgery at SMH. “But what truly defines success is how well patients recover, how we prevent the next event, and how our teams work together to guide them through the rest of their lives.”

🙌 Through innovation, collaboration and a seamless continuum of care, SMH's heart team is moving the needle on long-term survival — focusing not just on saving lives, but strengthening them!

Colorectal cancer is now the leading cause of cancer-related death in people under 50 in the U.S.?

💬 “When you look at all diagnosed colon cancer cases, an alarming — and growing — percentage are in people younger than 50,” says Stephen Kucera, MD, medical director of gastroenterology and endoscopic oncology at Sarasota Memorial.

But it doesn’t have to be this way. According to Dr. Kucera, routine screening, including colonoscopy, can detect and remove pre-cancerous polyps before they fully form, allowing your physician to stop them before they become a serious threat to your health.

💙 To our first responders: You take care of our community every day. We’re here for you too. 941-917-8252.

🐾💙 At SMH, care goes beyond medicine! Through the Kolschowsky Research and Education Institute, and the generosity of Sarasota Memorial Healthcare Foundation board member Deb Kabinoff, SMH is among the first in the U.S. to test the benefits of companion robotic pets as a complementary, non-pharmacological approach to dementia care in the acute care hospital setting.

Led by principal investigator and SMH’s geriatric program coordinator Joanna D’Elia, MSN, RN, GERO-BC, CPHQ, the trial was inspired by years of caring for older adults and witnessing how disorienting and upsetting hospital stays can be for patients with dementia, often prolonging recovery.

💬 “I wanted to find a way to engage dementia patients in the hospital and give them companionship — something beyond sitting in a room focused solely on medical care,” D’Elia said.

✨ SMH researchers say patients paired with the robotic pets experienced fewer drops in blood pressure and heart rate, fewer fall-risk episodes, shorter hospital stays and a greater chance of returning home rather than needing additional care.
