Have you ever read the directions on a package of medication and wondered how the same pill could work for a large man or a small woman? The directions just said something like, “Adults take one tablet,” right? What kind of adults? Mature ones? College athletes? Yoga instructors? Are you the same as every other adult? How could “one-size-fits-all” apply with medicine? Your question has led you to discover something about pharmacy that is unique to our time. Until the 1950’s, when mass drug manufacturing was introduced, nearly all medications were “made from scratch” by a pharmacist and mixed together with the exact dose and form that each patient required. This was pharmacy compounding, the science and art of preparing medications for individuals according to their specific needs. When the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act was passed in 1938, very few premade dosage forms were available. Pharmacists compounded more than 250 million medications each year, and patients received medications that they could be sure were made specifically for their situation.
