In the yoga tradition, the spine and chakra system are intimately connected.

The position of the spine in each pose is important both structurally and energetically.

The spine is the main energetic pathway in the body, referred to as the sushumna nadi. The spine houses the 7 main chakras, starting with the root chakra at the base of the spine and ending with the crown chakra at the crown of the head. Traditionally, yoga poses were meant to move vital life force energy, or prana, throughout the body, with spinal alignment acting as the main conduit.

Yoga classes place emphasis on the position of the spine, and the reason is to allow the prana to freely flow from the root chakra to the crown chakra. Yoga promotes a healthy spine, which in turn promotes a balanced chakra system, which can lead to improved mental and physical health.

If you want to dive deeper into the chakra system, we offer many ways to do so. Our Yoga Teacher Training program has an entire weekend dedicated to learning about spinal anatomy, co-lead by Heather Dacus, DO; MPH; ERYT-500, Kristen Zorda, ERYT-500, and Beth Mausert, ERYT-500 and a separate weekend on the chakra system, lead by Nini Gridley ERYT-500; MS Ed; BFRP. Nini also leads her own workshop series, Full Spectrum Healing Chakra Series, where you will spend 9 weeks learning in-depth about each chakra.

We want to support you wherever you are in your yoga practice. Here are some ways to deepen your practice 🪷

1. Show up consistently with compassion
Find the balance between effort (showing up consistently) and ease (being patient and understanding with yourself).

2. Take the lessons you learn in class off the mat
On the mat we practice things like letting go, being present, gratitude, detachment…. it’s just as important to bring these practices into our everyday lives.

3. Practice pranayama and meditation
Take time to focus the mind and connect with your breath. We offer free meditation and pranayama classes at Yoga Mandali so you can explore these practices.
4. Connect with a teacher that resonates with you
We have an array of yoga teachers who offer all different types of classes, so you can play around and see who best fits your needs. Finding the right teacher is part of keeping our Bakhti lineage alive.

5. Read sacred texts and books on yoga
Reading is a time to learn and can be a meditative practice in itself. We have a library at the studio where you can check out books like “The Heart of Yoga”, “Yoga Sequencing”, translations of the Gita, and “Anatomy of the Spirit”.

6. Take a yoga teacher training
A Yoga Teacher Training is a beautiful container to put all these practices into place. Just because it’s called Yoga TEACHER Training, does not mean it’s only for people who want to teach yoga. It’s for anyone who wants to deepen their practice.

7. Go on a retreat
Retreating from the chaos of the world gives you time to look inward and connect with yourself, your community, and nature. offers restorative retreats to guide you through your journey.

5 signs you’re ready for YTT at Yoga Mandali:
1. If you’re a dedicated yoga student, you probably have questions about sequencing, integrating intention and asanas, the purpose of certain poses and breath… Asking yourself these questions means you’re looking for more than just to attend yoga classes, you want to understand them on a deeper, more holistic level.
2. You feel most aligned when you’re on your mat. The mat is a safe space for many of us who practice regularly. If you want to have more of that experience and learn how to recreate that feeling for yourself and others, you’re ready for YTT.
3. You’ve already begun exploring other modalities. Practicing yoga is part of a major network of other healing modalities that can aid you on your path. If you have started exploring things like reiki, acupuncture, Ayurveda, sound healing, aromatherapy, and massage, YTT is the perfect opportunity to deepen your understanding of how all these modalities are connected.
4. You want a major life change but don’t know where to start or what it is exactly. Taking the time to pause, reconnect with your breath and body, and explore your truth are all ways to realign your life with your dharma.
5. You want to share your love of yoga with the world. Even if you have no interest in leading a yoga class, our training will give you the tools and knowledge to speak knowledgeably on the foundations of yoga; pranayama, yamas and niyamas, meditation, intention, mindfulness, asana… the list goes on.
