Brevard Association for the Advancement of the Blind

Brevard Association for the Advancement of the Blind BAAB is a non-profit serving those with vision loss in Brevard County, FL. We are available to help you by appointment, so please give us a call or email today.

Brevard Association for the Advancement of the Blind (BAAB) was founded in 1966. We are a non-profit organization staffed by volunteers and funded by donations. Our recording department currently records 3 magazines for national distribution by the Library of Congress through the talking books library. We also have a Program for Independent Living which is offered 3 times a year to adults with varying degrees of vision loss. The goal of this program is to enable our students to stay in their homes as long as possible without having to hire outside help. They learn how to arrange their rooms to get around them easily, how to label and organize, and how to develop their other senses among other things. We also have guest speakers from various agencies including Satellite Beach Fire Dept., Brevard County Sheriff's Office, The Talking Book Library in Cocoa, Space Coast Area Transit, SHINE, and CVI. Countless people have benefitted from both programs over the years.

🤓Did you know that February is AMD (Age-Related Macular Degeneration) and low vision awareness month? 🤓

🕶️AMD is the leading cause of permanent impairment of reading and fine-detail vision among people aged 60 and older. 👓

A low vision diagnosis can come at any age, in fact, nearly 500,000 Americans are newly diagnosed with low vision annually. Though low vision is more common as you age, it can affect children and young adults, as well.

BAAB is here as a free resource to those in need of community, guidance, and independence. Every single Thursday we host a social event at our office in Satellite Beach. We provide refreshments (coffee, water, tea, donuts, etc.) and a safe place to spend time with people that are going through similar struggles as you. Everyone is welcome, caregivers/friends/family of people with vision loss are encouraged to attend!

📚We also provide a program called, Program for Independent Living, multiple times throughout the year📅. In these classes we help our students (of all ages) gain confidence and independence through teaching various valuable daily skills. ⌨️📲

Sometimes things we no longer use can become life-changing tools for someone else. Screen readers, an old magnifier, a talking device that you no longer need could give someone else confidence in their independence. If you have gently used assistive technology that you'd like to donate, we can give it a new purpose. Your donation doesn't just sit on a shelf, it goes directly to someone in your community who truly needs it. 💗
