Sugar Chains in the Brain: New Pathway Behind Depression Found

A new study shows that abnormal sugar modifications on brain proteins can directly cause depressive symptoms, shifting the focus away from traditional neurotransmitter-based explanations.

Chronic stress alters glycosylation in the prefrontal cortex, destabilizing brain circuits and impairing emotional regulation.

By targeting the enzyme St3gal1, researchers were able to either trigger or relieve depressive-like behaviors in mice, identifying it as a central molecular switch.

This discovery opens promising new pathways for treating depression beyond current drug options.
