Satya is the second Yama (restraint) in yoga philosophy derived from the 8 limbs. Satya means truthfulness, non lying, living with honesty, integrity, and authenticity in thought, action, and speech. It calls us to live in truth and reality.
Ahimsa is the first Yama. It means non violence not just in actions but in all things. Ahimsa challenges us to expand our awareness of how our thoughts, beliefs, language, habits, and policies can harm. How systems we belong to can marginalize, injure, and traumatize people, especially those who are most in need and most vulnerable.
was one of the first yoga teachers who deeply inspired my practice. I loved her east coast accent, her realness, her ability to speak so clearly from the heart. She was brave and bold and honest but she was also soft, gracious, and loving. Her post yesterday included the shared images below. I wanted to share them with you too.
These are not easy times but this is our reality and yoga gives us the guidance and the strength to do the work. I believe the human voice has the capacity to heal and empower. Right now we all must find our voice, to SPEAK OUT, to SPEAK TRUTH. We are called to protect those who are vulnerable and being actively harmed through the violence of both physical harm and systematic policies that target immigrants, LGTBQ, trans people, women’s rights, people of color, and indigenous groups.
