𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗿𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗯𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮. Rural America has over 1,300 Critical Access Hospitals, 900 other rural hospitals, 5,400 Rural Health Clinics, and over 6,000 Rural Health Centers. These facilities form the foundation of primary care for millions of people, keeping communities strong, healthy, and connected. National Rural Health Day is this Thursday! Join us in celebrating the power and resilience of rural communities and the providers who make care possible.

The WOW Collaborative is bringing people and organizations together to build a stronger, healthier Wisconsin, one where every community has access to the care it needs.

Led by the Rural Wisconsin Health Cooperative (RWHC), the Wisconsin Association of Free & Charitable Clinics (WAFCC), and the Wisconsin Primary Health Care Association (WPHCA)—in partnership with the Wisconsin Department of Health Services—the WOW Collaborative will host statewide and regional strategy sessions to create a shared vision for health and wellbeing in Wisconsin.

📍 Feb. 17 – Lake of the Torches Resort Casino, Lac du Flambeau
📍 Mar. 4 – St. Norbert College, De Pere

He grew up in rural Wisconsin 🚜 Now, he’s getting ready to serve them 💚 Our state has a rural doctor shortage, and Shane Hoffman is part of the SOLUTION!

This spring, he became the FIRST graduate of the UW School of Medicine and Public Health’s new program that trains doctors interested in serving rural communities in THREE years instead of four!

Students involved take ALL the same required courses — they just move at a faster pace…

✅ Instead of the traditional break between their first and second years of medical school, participants immediately jump into their second-year clinical rotations.

✅ They also have fewer requirements for elective courses (especially ones around career exploration), since they’ve already decided on their career path!

Since 2007, the UW School of Medicine and Public Health’s “Wisconsin Academy for Rural Medicine,” has graduated more than 300 students.

Roughly three-quarters of them have returned to Wisconsin post-residency, with 42% practicing in rural communities ❤️

Love seeing our member hospitals like The Richland Hospital and Clinics investing in the next generation of healthcare workers!!

We hosted 27 students from Richland Center, Riverdale and River Valley High Schools for our 3rd annual Career Day on Thursday, October 30. "This event gives students a first-hand look at careers available right in their own back yards," says Sara Stibbe, program coordinator. Students had the chance to work alongside and hear from members of OR/Outpatient, Obstetrics, Nursing, Lab, X-ray, Pharmacy, Social Work, Information Systems, Medical Assistants, Respiratory, and the Richland Hospital Foundation. The students loved trying their hands at CPR, but seeing the LUCAS device in action was a highlight. They even learned about volunteer and job shadowing opportunities as well.

This annual event is a great chance for all of us to see our work through the eyes of the potential next generation of medical professionals. It was great to see so many inspired students!
