📢 Important Health Alert from Great Lakes Optometry! 📢

To our valued patients, we want to bring your attention to a recent voluntary recall of over 3 million bottles of various over-the-counter eyedrops. This recall, initiated in April 2026, is due to a lack of assurance of sterility during the manufacturing process, primarily affecting products from K.C. Pharmaceuticals distributed under numerous store brands.

Why the Recall?
The recall was issued out of an abundance of caution to prevent potential eye infections or other serious health issues that could arise from non-sterile products. While no major complications have been widely reported, your eye health is our top priority.

What You Should Do:
If you use store-brand eyedrops, please check the links below for the full list of affected products, brands, and lot codes. If you possess any of the recalled eyedrop products, the FDA advises that you immediately discard them. Do not use any eyedrops from the listed brands and lot codes. If you have used these products and experience any symptoms of an eye infection or other adverse reactions, such as redness, irritation, pain, or vision changes, please contact Great Lakes Optometry or your healthcare provider immediately.

Your vision and health are paramount to us. Please do not hesitate to contact our office if you have any questions or concerns.

Stay safe and healthy,
The Team at Great Lakes Optometry

Several factors contribute to this:

Hormones: pregnancy and post partum fluctuations, birth control, and menopause can cause vision changes.

Autoimmune diseases: such as lupus, Sjogrens, and thyroid eye disease are more common in women & can impact eye health.

How can you protect yourself? Knowing your family history, having annual eye exams, and following your eye doctors recommendations is a great way to keep yourself healthy and on track.

Amniotic membrane treatment uses sterilized human placenta tissue as a biological bandage to treat severe ocular surface diseases.

The membranes are applied in office and are non invasive. It stays on anywhere from 3-5 days, and offers a restorative option that speeds up healing and enhances overall ocular comfort. The most common side effect is a foreign body sensation and blurred vision.

here’s a little peek into the exam room while Dr. Tom applies an amniotic membrane bandage lens to a patients eye.
