Did you know approximately 15,000 babies are born every hour worldwide. I just cant believe something SOOOOO crazy and miraculous happens this often. And I somehow have the absolute privilege and honor to see it over and over again.
It NEVER ceases to amaze me, and I was reminded of this again in SUCH a raw way when I attended this homebirth and the baby came faster than the midwives could arrive.
As the attending doula, all I remember is hearing those all too familiar groans that come when baby is close, and I jumped to the ground of the bathroom floor where mama was planted on her hands and knees as the baby began to crown just minutes after she had felt the urge to push. It all happened so fast, but I felt time slow completely down as I reached under, saw baby’s wet hair emerge more and more, heard mama roar through that final push, and felt baby burst into my hands—head, body, arms, legs, feet….in all its fluid and raw glory. And the cry. So pure. So glorious.
It’s one of those moments you come to recognize, once again, the seismic, life-altering power of birth that completely shatters any understanding I ever thought I had, leaving me trembling in awe at the sheer force of life itself. I am still in awe.
I don’t think midwifery is in my future, but many people have told me not everyone would want this kind of experience 😂🤷🏻♀️ But for me, it was one of the most amazing experiences of my life.
Congrats to this family!! Thank you for letting me be part of your birth in such a special way. ❤️
