I am a licensed mental health therapist, a certified childbirth instructor, and a DONA certified doula, and it is my joy and honor to support you and your growing family on your unique journey!

According to my mom, a doula is someone who:

šŸ‘‰ Helps mom AND partner prepare mentally and physically for birth
šŸ‘‰ Calms them when they are nervous and excited
šŸ‘‰ Helps them stay strong and comfortable through labor
šŸ‘‰ Makes God VERY VERY happy šŸ™
šŸ‘‰ Has the MOST MOST important job ā˜ļø

Honestly? She’s not wrong. šŸ˜Šā¤ļø

I am so thankful for parents who celebrated me walking down a non-conventional path. Instead of pushing me toward the typical doctor or lawyer route like many Asian households do, they have valued my work from day one even when they did not know what a doula was! And now more than ever, my mom truly sees how irreplaceable this support is for birthing families.

If you have a passion for birth but you've been hesitant to take the leap—let me show you the way. I built The Kindled Doula Academy to help Asian-rooted women transform this calling into a deeply prestigious, respected, and fulfilling career.

When people find out I’ve been a professional doula for over a decade, the first thing they usually say is: ā€œI could never do that. Being on call sounds exhausting. How do you have a life?ā€

I always smile, because the reality is the exact opposite.

Stepping out of the conventional box was scary as an Asian woman who was always taught to do the conventional, stable things. But stepping out of the box was the best thing I ever did and it didn’t restrict my freedom—it gave me complete freedom over it. Because I wasn’t chained to a rigid 9-to-5 desk, I was able to build a thriving, premium career around my family, my values, and my dreams.

Being a doula over the last 10 years has allowed me to:

• Homeschool my children and be fully present for their foundational years.
• Open our hearts and home to foster care, providing a safe landing for over 20 children.
• Host an open-door home where friends, family, and community were constantly gathered around our table.

Yes, babies come when they want to come. But when you build your business with high-level clinical systems, protective boundaries, and structural templates, the on-call lifestyle becomes your greatest asset. It allows you to protect your energy, be present for the people you love, and step into a deeply satisfying, high-impact vocation.

You don’t have to choose between a fulfilling career and a rich personal life. You just need the right framework.

It turns out, our collective cultural superpower is actually the ultimate birth strategy. šŸƒšŸ»ā€ā™€ļøšŸ’Ø

We joke about how much the Asian community loves a good walk (there is for real always an Asian grandma or grandpa or middle aged Asian person walking outside no matter what time of day…be it 4am or 8pm!), but the birth physiology behind it is undeniable.

I connected with an Asian OBGYN at a birth who shared that she recommends 3–5 miles of walking daily to her pregnant patients—and her data shows they consistently avoid going overdue AND have shorter births.

As doulas and birth mentors, this is the exact kind of clinical wisdom we pass down to our clients. Walking utilizes gravity, opens the pelvic outlet, and naturally guides the baby into optimal positioning, all while keeping the birthing person’s nervous system happy, grounded, and regulated! Bonus if you’re out in the sun ā˜€ļø.

Success is hollow if it requires you to leave your soul at the door. šŸ•Æļø

We were raised to chase the ā€˜safe’ path. We mastered the art of being ā€˜successful on paper’—the titles, the security, the checklist. But for many of us, that path led straight into a 9-5 fog.

It’s that feeling of being a ā€œProfessional Information Hubā€ for everyone else, while your own purpose feels like it’s fading into the background. You want work that feels as deep as your roots.

I see you. I see the advocate in you that is tired of being muffled by systems that don’t have a heart.

I’m building something for us. A way to bridge the prestigious career ambitions with the doula soul. No more starving.

I used to think being the family translator was just my responsibility. Translating citizenship exams for my grandma šŸ“, decoding medical jargon for my parents 🩺🄼, and staying on the phone with insurance companies šŸ“ž for hours until I got a ā€œYes.ā€ I had to stay calm, speak clearly, and advocate relentlessly until we had exactly what we needed.

I didn’t realize it then, but I was mastering the art of one of the most important parts of being a Professional Doula Sentinel.

This is a message for my fellow Asians and first-gen advocates who have lived this same story: This is your superpower!

That ability to navigate stressful medical systems and translate its meaning while holding a calm space for your family is exactly what makes you a powerhouse in the birth room.

In the Kindled Doula Academy, I’m not just teaching you how to be a doula. I’m teaching you how to take that lifelong skill of advocacy and give it the clinical scaffolding it deserves.

CTA: You are already an expert advocate. Now, let’s make it your career. Stay tuned for more updates on my upcoming doula training program!šŸ•ÆļøDM me ā€œupdate me!ā€ to stay posted!

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there. šŸ’

As a doula and therapist, I have the IMMENSE honor of witnessing the absolute miracle of women transforming into moms. The grit, the joys, the heartache that comes with motherhood… it’s unreal. So today, I want to give a little shoutout to all the different kinds of moms out there, realizing that we are all probably some combination of the following:

• The moms who have been a constant rock and show up daily to create all the magical moments for your family.
• The moms who have walked through the unthinkable, holding the memory of babies lost too soon.
• The moms who have struggled, made big mistakes, or felt they couldn’t be there the way they wanted to be.
• For the moms who have had to make the agonizing decision to give up their children or walked away much too early.

And for the children—those who have lost their mothers, and those navigating complicated family trees and family dynamics. ā¤ļøā¤ļøā¤ļøbiggest of hugs to all our babies.

Life is never a straight line, and every human journey is complex. Whether you are a mom who is present, a mom who is healing, a mom who is grieving, or a mom who is watching from a distance, Happy Mother’s Day.

My kids surprised me with these gifts today, and as I especially look at the hot sauces šŸŒ¶ļø, the berriesšŸ“šŸ«, and the cowboy boots šŸ‘¢ on the card…I can’t help but to just feel soooo seen. 😭🄰🄹

Happy Mother’s Day especially to my mom in Tanzania and my grandmama who insisted on cooking lunch for us on her day! ā¤ļøšŸ„°

Definitely did not see this redirection coming. šŸ•Šļø

I had just graduated from Johns Hopkins, my MS in Clinical Counseling in hand, fully prepared to step into the world of therapy. I had a path. I had a plan.

Then, I gave birth to my first.

They say birth changes you, but for me, it was also a total professional transformation. While I was fortunate to have an incredible doula by my side, I looked around and realized how rare that was in our community, especially Asian doulas. Most of the women in my circle didn’t even know what a doula was and were walking into their births blind, navigating a system that didn’t always see them, facing risks that could have been mitigated with the right advocacy.

So a little fire was lit. šŸ”„

And the clinical skills I learned at Hopkins didn’t disappear—they became the scaffolding for a decade-long career as a doula that I never could have planned for… and now I’m combining both worlds.

For the professional moms here: Have you ever had a ā€œre-directionā€ that felt like a total transformation? Any other birth junkies out there quietly thinking of stepping into the birth threshold? šŸ‘‡

I recently had the honor of sitting down with my dear former doula client, Brigitta, on her podcast, Motherhood Equipped. We dove deep into what it truly looks like to prepare for birth—not just logistically, but mentally and emotionally.

As a therapist and a doula, I’m passionate about helping women navigate the ā€œinner workā€ of pregnancy. Brigitta is doing incredible work to empower and equip women through every stage of motherhood. I’m so grateful she invited me to share my heart with her community!

My momma doulaing the doula.

Coming home from a postpartum overnight shift and seeing my mom waiting for me at the dining table to make sure I got back home safely, having already done all the dishes and cooking and holding down the fort while I’ve been gone, is the sweetest sight. It also has me thinking back to when I was a kid and she used to work the overnight shift at the post office for 20+ years at my current age (in her 30s and 40s… so young)! Can’t believe the sacrifice. More hustle than I could ever have.

She’s been seriously doulaing me and my kids while she’s been visiting, but mom and dad are flying back home tomorrow 😭.
