“I know people go through parenthood all the time, and I tried to prepare, but I still felt so completely blindsided.”

“As a working mom I live with guilt every… single… day… leaving my child.”

Did you know approximately 15,000 babies are born every hour worldwide. I just cant believe something SOOOOO crazy and miraculous happens this often. And I somehow have the absolute privilege and honor to see it over and over again.

It NEVER ceases to amaze me, and I was reminded of this again in SUCH a raw way when I attended this homebirth and the baby came faster than the midwives could arrive.

As the attending doula, all I remember is hearing those all too familiar groans that come when baby is close, and I jumped to the ground of the bathroom floor where mama was planted on her hands and knees as the baby began to crown just minutes after she had felt the urge to push. It all happened so fast, but I felt time slow completely down as I reached under, saw baby’s wet hair emerge more and more, heard mama roar through that final push, and felt baby burst into my hands—head, body, arms, legs, feet….in all its fluid and raw glory. And the cry. So pure. So glorious.

It’s one of those moments you come to recognize, once again, the seismic, life-altering power of birth that completely shatters any understanding I ever thought I had, leaving me trembling in awe at the sheer force of life itself. I am still in awe.

I don’t think midwifery is in my future, but many people have told me not everyone would want this kind of experience 😂🤷🏻‍♀️ But for me, it was one of the most amazing experiences of my life.

Congrats to this family!! Thank you for letting me be part of your birth in such a special way. ❤️

I didn’t think I could love another profession more than being a doula…

But this therapy thing comes mighty close.

About halfway into the year of adding therapy to my services, and it is incredible the growth I’ve seen in my clients with the work they are putting in.

Several of my clients who have reached out are in the postpartum period because let’s be real… a lot of the ugly comes out when you are under the stress of sleep deprivation, physical recovery from birth, juggling life with a new baby, hormonal changes. And I am so proud of them for prioritizing their health during this time.

Just to name a few, here are some of the reasons my current therapy clients from this week came to me for:

- Couples therapy for relationship issues starting from pre-baby life
- Couples therapy to strengthen relationship during transition of having a new baby
- Anxiety over being a new parent
- Depressive symptoms
- Obsessive thoughts
- Trauma recovery
- Communication fall-outs and learning general best practices

Let’s go!

When you are there to comfort your birth client but your birth client brings you gifts and thinks of your comfort at their own birth. 🥺❤️😭

By far the absolute favorite part of my childbirth classes is partners learning the relaxation and massage techniques. Birth is very hands on and knowing how to comfort and ease the waves of birth pangs is absolutely invaluable. All the right spots at the right time. I love watching partners ease into their role of active supporters!

2 Births this week.

One was 4 days long and ended in a successful VBAC. The other started as what felt like random “crampiness” (she assured her husband she was not having contractions)…. and the baby was born 4 hours later.

And the best quote of the week, “Excuse me, we need to get the doctor. The baby… the baby is coming out of my BUTT.”

She was DEAD serious 😅🥹… IYKYK.

When you get close to the pushing stage..it can really feel like you need to p**p, but it is most likely the baby ready to come out. And while it may feel like it, I can assure you that the baby most definitely will NOT come out of your butt. That is one promise I can make. 😂👍

From very early on, this couple’s prenatal visits were disheartening as their providers were recommending a c-section starting from their 20 week visit due to the size of the baby. Every single ultrasound and measurement predicted this baby would be 9-10 pounds if not much more and they were told if they attempted a vaginal birth, there could be shoulder dystocia, baby could get stuck, there could be an emergency, etc.

No doubt these are real possibilities but the chances of such are very small. Bodies are designed to stretch, joints and tissue softens to allow baby down, baby’s head are moldable to squeeze through. On top of that, those measurements of baby size are just estimates and are notorious for being wrong.

Long story short, we never dismissed medical advice, but we did try everything we could to bring this “big baby” down and out vaginally. There were many points along the way we knew a c-section could be on the table (and we would gladly do so IF needed), but with lots of hard work and different moves along the way, baby DID come down, baby DID fit, and baby WAS born vaginally!

Final verdict on weight? 8.5 pounds perfect! 👍🙏🙌🙌🙌

Fun fact: Less than 2% of doulas are Asian! Feeling like a 🦄😊.

When I first became a doula, most of the people in my Asian community had never used a doula, much less even heard of one… while doula support has been widely popular amongst most other racial ethnic backgrounds. I’m so happy that there is now more and more a growing awareness and knowledge of birth support and advocacy for women and their babies everywhere! It makes ALL the difference for improved birth outcomes, lowered risks and complications, and healthier/happier families!

Looking forward to the rest of this DONA Summit! Learning so much already. 😊❤️

Precious babies, I wish with all my heart your names were not written here this way. Words will forever fail to say how much you are loved and missed. But we carry you with us today and always. Thank you for being with us no matter how short that time may have been.

And to the parents who faced this unimaginable loss. Our hearts are with you and break with you.
