SANKALPA… Instead of making & breaking another“New Year’s resolution” this year…(resolutions often put the focus on something we view as negative about ourselves …Ex: stop smoking/vaping- I’m unhealthy. Lose weight- I’m too big)
Yoga offers a simpler, gentler, & often more effective way in the form of SANKALPA.
“San” is the root, meaning “connection to the highest truth” and “kalpa” means “vow”, so it is a promise or commitment to connect with your true nature.
Sankalpa originates in the heart, not the mind; and it begins to rise only when the mind begins to quiet. Yoga Nidra, Meditation, and Yoga practice are great ways to discover and cultivate your Sankalpa.
Examples are “I trust myself” “I am a source of abundance” “ I am content” “I bring joy to life”

Did you know that each yoga posture has one or often multiple corresponding chakras? For example postures like seated forward fold or yogic squat help to balance the Root Chakra (a.k.a. Muladhara Chakra), helping you to dig in or feel more rooted in your life and bring a sense of stability & security. A seated forward fold also helps balance the next two chakras as well, the sacral & solar plexus. If you’d like to explore how yoga postures connect with the chakra system (along with other off-the-mat philosophy), drop me a message or come check out a class in person.

Almost every night before I sleep I find some way to move. Nothing vigorous or stimulating…just some gentle stretching linked with my breath. I find that far more often than I realize, I’m holding tension in my muscles. This is totally normal; our bodies respond to mental & emotional tension by creating physical tension in our muscles to protect our bodies while our minds are focused on other things. This tightness at the end of the day could partially be our Central Nervous System protecting us, so we have to let it know we are safe & it is time to relax. We can do that by linking our breath to our movement & then dramatically slowing our movement. This signals calm on the outside, so our bodies respond with a little more calm on the inside.
Hope this inspires you to find a few inhales & exhales combined with some gentle slow movements tonight, & you might find a gentler path to sleep. Namasté 🙏🏻✌🏼💜😑
