St. Josephโ€™s/Candler has reportedly restricted doula support during labor. In a state already facing a maternal health crisis, this is a dangerous step backward.

Georgia currently holds an F from the March of Dimes for maternal and infant outcomes. Our state has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the nation, with Black birthing people experiencing significantly worse outcomes than others.

Research shows that doula support directly reduces the risk of preterm birth and cesarean delivery, yet policy shifts and โ€œpractice modelโ€ changes continue to create barriers to this essential care.

Birth justice means you have the right to have a child safely, with dignity, and with the support of your choice by your side. You have the right to informed consent, the right to refuse procedures, and the right to advocate for who supports you during labor.

Our hope is that St. Josephโ€™s/Candler will review this policy and find a way for medical providers and doulas to work together for the mothers of Savannah. Pay attention to the shifts happening around you. Your well-being is tied to them.

will host a Birthing Rights session in Savannah, GA this March, focused on helping mothers, birthing people, and their families understand their options and make informed decisions that feel right for them and their babies.

Breastfeeding your baby is one of the best decisions you can make for yourself.

So many benefits. Your body can and is able to provide what your baby needs.

You are enough!

๐Ÿผ๐Ÿซถ๐Ÿฝ This is a lactating breast. Not cysts. Not inflammation. Not โ€œtoxic buildup.

Those little bubble-looking spaces?

Theyโ€™re called alveoli and theyโ€™re where milk is made. โœจ

Breasts are made up of thousands of tiny milk-producing sacs, clustered into lobules, all connected by a branching highway of ducts ๐Ÿ›ฃ๏ธ๐Ÿงฌ that carry milk toward the ni**le.

When milk is present, those alveoli can look:
๐Ÿ’งrounded
๐Ÿ’งpale or white
๐Ÿ’งfull and distended

That white youโ€™re seeing?
๐Ÿฅ› Thatโ€™s milk.

Not stored in one big โ€œreservoir.โ€

Not sitting in pockets.

Milk is made continuously in these tiny sacs and released when your body gets the signal, like baby suckling, hand expression, pumping, touch, even thinking about your baby ๐Ÿ’ž

๐ŸŒธ A few important things most people were never taught:

๐Ÿฉธ Breasts are highly vascular, especially in pregnancy and lactation. All that blood flow supports milk production.
๐Ÿง  Milk ejection is hormonal, not mechanical. Oxytocin matters. Safety matters.
๐Ÿ“š This anatomy is normal. Functional. Brilliant.

So if youโ€™ve ever seen images like this labeled as โ€œdisease,โ€ โ€œabnormal,โ€ or โ€œconcerningโ€โ€ฆ thatโ€™s not your body being wrong, thatโ€™s education being missing.

โœจ Your body doesnโ€™t fail at feeding.
โœจ Your breasts arenโ€™t broken.
โœจ This system has sustained human life for thousands of years.

Milk-making isnโ€™t simple.

Itโ€™s alive, responsive, and powerful.

And it deserves to be understood, not feared. ๐Ÿซถ๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿผ

โ™ฅ๏ธThis is a conceptual illustration, not a literal or to-scale image of breast anatomy. Itโ€™s meant to show how milk-producing structures relate to ducts and blood supply, not what you would see in a real dissection. The physiology is real but the proportions are illustrative like what we would see in medical education all the time because real anatomy is too small, complex, and layered to photograph clearly sometimes. We often use illustrations in anatomy textbooks, lactation education, and physiology lectures.โ™ฅ๏ธ

In recent years, Vitamin D has come into greater focus, as it is recognized as an important component of bone health, immune system functioning, and a handful of other physiological processes. But did you know that low levels of Vitamin D have been linked to risks associated with maternal mortality and morbidity, namely preeclampsia and gestational diabetes?

It is also important to note that people need various levels of Vitamin D exposure based on a variety of reasons. If youโ€™d like to know more about Vitamin D and how it supports a pregnant person's health and wellbeing, join our Birth Justice Coordinator, Shanti Moore on behalf of SisterSong as we discuss what roles vitamin D plays in the body, how it is processed, sources of vitamin D, and what to ask your doctor or midwife about your vitamin D levels.

This workshop will be offered every Thursday during the month of January 2026, starting January 15th. For details on how to register, visit the link in bio. See you inside!๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿพ

Thereโ€™s something sacred about maternityโ€”the stillness, the strength, and the gentle movement that tells a whole story without a single word. ๐Ÿค
At Shot by Somi, we donโ€™t just photograph expecting mothersโ€”we capture the flow, the grace, and the beautiful transition of life in motion. Every curve, every breath, every moment becomes art.

Because this season deserves to be remembered exactly as it feels. โœจ

Georgia just got an F for preterm births on the 2024 March of Dimes Report Card. In Savannah-Chatham County, 1 in 7 babies is born early and Black mothers and birthing folks are hit the hardest.

A few things can contribute to preterm births. chronic health conditions, like preeclampsia, inadequate prenatal care, economic reason, environmental conditions, and stress.

We do have the power to fight back.

Take a prenatal class.

Consider a midwife and doula for your pregnancy journey.

Educate yourselves about pregnancy, policies that directly impact your reproductive health + rights.

It takes all of us to protect each other. Period.
