UNCONDITIONAL and ALL are the key words here. Until you truly let yourself free, there will be restriction. Restriction increases cravings, leads to overeating, and adds a whole lot more stress.

Does it sound overwhelming? That's normal. Choose 1 food, incorporate it into your diet and move forward. One step at a time.

Take away the power.

If serving sizes are a trigger for you, it's okay to take a step away from them. However they are an awesome resource for when we are trying to finds food that keep us full, help us recover etc. Shifting your mindset takes time, but it's the most practical solution when we are surrounded by food labels daily.

This is why people dread making changes to their eating habits. There are a handful foods that have been accepted as "good" or "healthy" and it gives the impression that all others have to be eliminated. Maybe it's broccoli and salmon. Maybe it's avocados, grilled chicken, green powders... get what I'm saying? The nutrients that are in these glorified foods are in other forms. You shouldn't be trying to follow a meal plan that has foods you don't genuinely enjoy. I am confident you can find protein sources or veggies that you like. It's trial and error. Figure out what foods you like, what foods make you feel good and where those overlap.

It's true! You should be able to enjoy the foods you love most.

When I was stuck in a disordered eating mindset, I avoided pasta, peanut butter, cheese, and Reece's. I have no idea how I didn't recognize that as a glaring problem right off the bat. I don't eat these foods everyday now, but the more I restricted them, the more stress it caused.

It takes a minute to step away from food rules, but it's really the only solution. Give your body what it's asking for. It is possible to develop healthy habits that work WITH your lifestyle.

Probably not! Goals should be ACTIONS. When we set goals that are unrealistic or don’t have clear steps towards a solution, it can lead to frustration. Creating small specific goals can be much more productive than a huge “that would be nice” goal. Small wins keep you focused and motivated.

Rachel Ussery Photography gave me an excuse to reintroduce myself📸

My name is Rachel, of course, and I am a registered dietitian in Savannah, GA. I’m originally from AZ but completed my undergrad in the tundra (Michigan). Gymnastics brought nutrition into my life early and I’ve learned to love it. I think it’s awesome to figure out how food can affect your performance, happiness, lifestyle, and health. Here are 5 more ~fun~ facts🤪

1. I am a former NCAA gymnast. My favorite event was 100% beam.
2. My fast food meal of choice is a large side of red beans & rice from Popeyes
3. I will voluntarily eat waffles, chicken nuggets and corn frozen
4. My favorite holiday is Christmas
5. I cannot stand the look, taste, texture or idea of mayonnaise
