Moon River Pediatrics is a proud supporter for this year’s Maternal Health Clothing Drive, benefiting families in need at Memorial Hospital in Savannah.

This wonderful initiative is led by two Mercer Medical students. This drive collects gently used or new maternity and baby essentials, including clothing, diapers, blankets, and more.

You may drop off items at our office during business hours, or we can help put you in contact with the organizers for direct pickup. Want to help but don't have items to give? A Venmo option is also available.

Our final Black Women in Medicine is Marilyn Hughes Gaston, M.D. Faced by poverty and prejudice as a young student, she was determined to become a physician. She has dedicated her career to medical care for poor and minority families, and campaigns for health care equality for all Americans. Her 1986 study of sickle-cell disease led to a nationwide screening program to test newborns for immediate treatment, and she was the first African American woman to direct a public health service bureau (the Bureau of Primary Health Care in the United States Department of Health and Human Services).

The resurgence of measles in the United States, particularly with new cases emerging in Georgia, highlights a pressing public health concern largely fueled by vaccine misinformation. Measles, a highly contagious disease, can lead to severe health complications, yet it is entirely preventable through vaccination. Herd immunity, which requires at least 95% of the population to be vaccinated, is crucial in halting the spread of this virus. Unfortunately, the vaccination rate among school-age children in Georgia has dropped to 88% for the 2023-2024 school year, well below the threshold needed for effective herd immunity. Our goal is to provide a better understanding of the importance of vaccines and prevent the spread of preventable disease like measles.
