Meyer Slater Art

Meyer Slater Art Original Oyster Paintings from the Lowcountry As a native Savannahian, I've always called the south Georgia coast my home. Simon’s Island.

My fondest memories include beach days on Tybee Island, crabbing from the family dock on the Grove River, enjoying oyster roasts with my family and friends, and living on St. The smell of the pluff mud is the smell of home. My middle name honors my maternal grandmother, Rebecca Felton Meyer, who taught me my love for the coast, and thus provided the name of my artistic venture, Meyer Slater. My gr

andmother dreamed of owning a “shack on the water” one day. It is my goal to bring a piece of coastal nature inside your home through my drawings, all in homage to my grandmother and all that she was to so many. All pieces are originals with professional framing. Please message me if you have any questions or specific requests. I am glad to accommodate and look forward to hearing from you.

3 months ago, I had 3 successive nights dreaming of navy blue oysters. After overanalyzing my dreams and color schemes, this monochromatic canvas started coming to life. As much as I wanted to add more color, I just couldn’t. It’s not in my nature to let things be without overanalyzing, but I know I had those dreams for a reason, and I’m working on letting the painting take me where it wants to go.
It also has the most perfect oyster in the bottom right hand corner - one expertly painted by a 2.5 year old who loves all things his Mama does. Especially oysters.
Livvy has aptly names this one :

Correcting a couple of things that were bothering me on a commissioned piece, so while I had the paint back out, I just kept going. The beauty of starting the commissioned piece a few weeks ago (will reveal soon!), is that it required me to get everything back out. When the pandemic started, my studio quickly turned into my office, and my easel got pushed aside. Feels good to be back.

It’s a rainy day in the lowcountry, so I wanted to share this colorful piece. I have grappled with it for a while, and finally propped it up where its home will be in an attempt to decide what else it needs. I was telling a dear friend this weekend that I was unhappy with it - it’s different than most of my pieces - messy, colorful, and to me, looks unfinished. She looked at me and said - “it’s life. It’s a journey. It’s messy. It’s colorful. It’s unfinished. But when you step back and take it all in, it’s beautiful.” She said, “don’t do one more thing to this piece. Sign your name and enjoy it.” And because of who she is, I listened to her, and it’s now my favorite piece I’ve ever done.

In the midst of the season, I finished a new piece I’ve been messing with for a while. I’m loving working with golds as the base. I feel like it helps me capture that we luckily experience often in the low country.

From one day to the next Barrett goes from standing to walking, drinking a bottle to a camelback, loving time with all of his cousins, enjoying riding in the wheelychair with his Uncle Gary, eating shrimp lovingly peeled by his Aunt Carla, laughing at his Uncle Dennis as he would reach for his beer, eating all of Dad’s pancakes at breakfast, and generally loving life. Oh, and then there’s and the pluff mud / marsh grass exploration incident.....he tried to tell me he didn’t need a bath because the mud matches his coat, but I won that argument.
