Alzheimers.gov is the focus of this resource post. This site provides links to two other websites that have additional helpful information: U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (https://www.hhs.gov/) and National Institutes of Health (https://www.nih.gov/).
The first thing offered on Alzheimers.gov is an easy to read explanation of “What is Alzheimer’s Disease” and “What are Related Dementias.” This is followed by material discussing causes, signs and symptoms, diagnosis and treatment, stages, what can be done, as well as resources.
In addition, the site offers practical information for those living with Alzheimer’s or a related Dementia, caregivers, and professionals. Topics covered include, but are not limited to, dealing with changes in behavior and communication, safety, and everyday care. There are also sections addressing how to plan for the future after diagnosis, how to find services, and much more.
Some information is tailored expressly for caregivers and professionals. One feature that stood out above and beyond other sites reviewed was the direct link to evidence-based dementia curricula and practice guidelines. This curricula can be helpful for any type of care provider, from physician to informal caregiver. Included in this training is more than 25 modules each with a presentation, references, a faculty guide, and continuing education details for professionals. And… wait for it… this training is FREE!
