So I was researching some corneal surgery techniques and I came across this video I posted 10 years ago of sutureless corneal transplantation. We were one of the first centers in the country to begin doing corneal transplants without stitches.

Another happy patient. Told he was not a good LASIK candidate, we were able to correct his vision with the ICL and restore his vision to better than 20/20 in each eye. If you’ve been told you can’t have LASIK come see us; we might be able to help you with the ICL or other procedures like SMILE or PRK.

I was aware of 2025 being the 75th anniversary of the IOL, but didn’t realize that today was the actual day. The Ridley story is fascinating; there have been books written about it. My father trained in London for a year in 1965; he knew the nurse that assisted in Ridley’s first operation.

Ridley also discovered the cause of River Blindness in Africa (onchocerciasis volvula) and pioneered treatment for it, saving untold millions from blindness from that too.

It is a travesty that he never won the Nobel Prize. A group of us from ASCRS tried to make this happen without success prior to his death.

I never met him but I did get to see him at a medical meeting 25 years ago. He was absolutely vilified for most of his career; it wasn’t until the 80’s that his contributions were finally appreciated

Seventy-five years ago, Harold Ridley successfully implanted the world’s first artificial intraocular lens.

Ten million SMILEs! We were thrilled to receive these materials from Zeiss today letting us know that the 10 million eye threshold with SMILE has now been passed worldwide.

What is SMILE, you ask? SMILE is an acronym for “Small Incision Lenticule Extraction”, the newest procedure for treating nearsightedness and astigmatism. Less invasive than LASIK, it also allows for quick recovery of vision.
