Neurosurgery Awareness Month Spotlight: Vascular Neurosurgery

The term vascular means “pertaining to a blood vessel.” In the brain and spine, vascular conditions can be serious, often life-threatening, and require expert neurosurgical care. At the Neurosurgical & Spine Institute of Savannah, our team is skilled in diagnosing and treating a wide range of neurovascular conditions, including:

🔹 Aneurysms – bulging, weakened areas in blood vessels that can rupture without warning.
🔹 Arteriovenous Malformations (AVMs) – abnormal tangles of arteries and veins that disrupt normal blood flow.
🔹 Carotid Artery Disease – narrowing of the arteries that supply blood to the brain, increasing stroke risk.
🔹 Stroke – when blood flow to the brain is interrupted, requiring urgent and expert care.

Every second matters when it comes to vascular neurosurgery. Our specialists are dedicated to providing advanced, life-saving treatments that restore blood flow, prevent complications, and improve outcomes for our patients.

Thank you to everyone who joined Dr. Lingo’s Healthy Spine, Healthy Aging discussion yesterday!

Dr. Lingo shared valuable insights on how our spine changes as we age, common conditions like arthritis, and practical tips to stay strong and active:

✅ Maintain good posture & lift carefully
✅ Stay flexible with simple yoga stretches
✅ Build strength with back-friendly exercises
✅ Support bone health through nutrition
✅ Know when to seek help for persistent pain, numbness, or mobility changes

He also discussed treatment options — from conservative approaches like physical therapy, medication, and lifestyle changes to advanced surgical techniques that relieve pain and help restore quality of life.

Takeaway: A healthy spine is key to staying mobile, independent, and active as we age.

Neurosurgery or Neurology? Here’s How They Differ:

The names sound similar, but neurosurgery and neurology are distinct specialties.

Neurologists diagnose and treat conditions of the brain, spine, and nerves without surgery. They focus on managing conditions like migraines, epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and neuropathy through medications, therapy, and other non-surgical methods.

Neurosurgeons are trained to treat these same areas and perform surgery when it’s necessary—but surgery isn’t always the first step. In fact, neurosurgeons often begin with conservative treatments such as physical therapy, medications, or injections, and only recommend surgery after other options have been explored.

The more you know, the better you can make informed choices about your care—especially during Neurosurgery Awareness Month!

In honor of Neurosurgery Awareness Month, we are drawing attention to the full range of care neurosurgeons provide. While brain surgery often comes to mind, neurosurgeons are also highly trained specialists in diagnosing and treating complex spine conditions.

Your spine is the body’s information highway, carrying nerve signals between your brain and the rest of your body. When spinal nerves are compressed, irritated, or damaged, it can lead to pain, weakness, numbness, and other life-changing symptoms.

Neurosurgeons are uniquely trained to diagnose and treat complex spine conditions, offering both non-surgical and surgical solutions tailored to each patient’s needs.

Common reasons to seek a neurosurgery consult for spine care include:

- Persistent neck or back pain that doesn’t improve with rest or therapy
- Arm or leg pain that radiates from the neck or lower back
- Numbness, tingling, or weakness in your arms, hands, legs, or feet
- Difficulty with balance or coordination
- Loss of bladder or bowel control (seek immediate medical attention)

If you’re living with symptoms like these, talk to your doctor about a referral to a neurosurgeon. Our goal is simple — to reduce your pain and improve your mobility so you can get back to the activities you love.
