Blood cancer, also known as hematological malignancy, is a group of diseases that affect the blood-forming cells in the bone marrow. These cells produce red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets, which are essential for maintaining a healthy body.

Types of Blood Cancer
- Leukemia: Cancer of white blood cells
- Lymphoma: Cancer of the lymphatic system, which includes lymph nodes
- Myeloma: Cancer of plasma cells, which produce antibodies
- Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS): A group of disorders that affect the production of blood cells

Causes:
The exact cause of most blood cancers is unknown. However, some risk factors

Include:
Exposure to radiation or certain chemicals, Genetic factors, Certain autoimmune disorders, and Previous cancer treatments.

Symptoms:
Symptoms of blood cancer can vary depending on the type and severity of the disease.

Common symptoms may include:
Fatigue
Fever
Night sweats
Bone pain
Enlarged lymph nodes
Easy bruising or bleeding
Increased risk of infections

At DWCC, we offer Blood Transfusions!

A blood transfusion is a medical procedure where blood or blood components are transferred from one person (the donor) to another (the recipient).

Blood transfusions are used to:
Replace lost blood due to trauma, surgery, or bleeding disorders

Increase blood cell counts in conditions such as anemia, leukemia, or bone marrow failure

Provide specific blood components, such as platelets for clotting or plasma for blood clotting factors

Types of Blood Transfusions

Whole blood transfusion: Contains all blood components
Red blood cell transfusion: Provides oxygen-carrying red blood cells
Platelet transfusion: Helps with blood clotting
Plasma transfusion: Contains proteins and clotting factors
Granulocyte transfusion: Provides white blood cells for fighting infection

Benefits

Replenishes lost blood and improves oxygen delivery to the body
Prevents complications from low blood cell counts or bleeding disorders
Supports recovery from trauma, surgery, or disease

What's the difference between Palliative Care and Hospice?

Palliative care can be given at any stage of a serious illness, alongside treatments meant to cure or control the illness, while hospice care is a specific type of palliative care for people with a terminal illness who have six months or less to live and are not seeking curative treatments. Both aim to improve quality of life by managing pain and other symptoms, but hospice focuses on end-of-life comfort and support when a cure is no longer possible.

Now, let's take a deep dive...

Palliative Care
Timing
Provided at any stage of a serious illness, from diagnosis onward.

Goals
To provide relief from symptoms like pain, fatigue, and stress.

Treatment
Can be given at the same time as treatments intended to cure or prolong life.

Who it's for
Patients with serious illnesses at any stage who want symptom management, regardless of whether they are seeking a cure.

Hospice Care
Timing
Typically for individuals with a terminal illness whose life expectancy is six months or less.

Goals
To provide comfort, pain relief, and support for the patient and their family as they approach the end of life.

Treatment
Patients agree to stop curative treatments to focus on comfort and quality of life.

Who it's for
People with a serious illness who can no longer be cured or choose to stop trying to cure their illness.

Key Differences at a Glance

Eligibility
Palliative care is for any serious illness at any stage; hospice care is for terminal illnesses within a six-month prognosis.

Purpose
Palliative care can be given with or without curative treatment, while hospice care focuses on comfort when curative treatment is no longer an option.

How much do you know about Breast Cancer?

Breast cancer is a disease where cells in the breast grow uncontrollably and can spread to other parts of the body. It typically starts in the milk ducts or lobules, but can also involve surrounding tissue. While it's most common in women, it can also affect men. Symptoms may include a new lump, swelling, skin changes, or ni**le discharge. Early detection through screening and prompt medical evaluation for symptoms are crucial for effective treatment, which can involve surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, or targeted therapy.

How Breast Cancer Develops

Uncontrolled cell growth
Breast cancer begins when cells in the breast develop changes, or mutations, in their DNA, causing them to grow and multiply out of control.

Tumor formation
These abnormal cells can form a mass called a tumor.

Invasive vs. in situ
A cancer is considered "in situ" if it hasn't spread beyond its origin, but if it grows into nearby tissues or spreads to other parts of the body (metastasizes), it's called "invasive".

Common types
The most common forms are invasive ductal carcinoma (starting in the milk ducts) and invasive lobular carcinoma (starting in the milk-producing lobules).

Common Signs and Symptoms

While some breast cancers are found by screening before symptoms appear, these are potential warning signs:
- A new lump or mass in the breast or underarm area.
- Swelling of all or part of the breast.
- Skin irritation or dimpling, sometimes described as resembling an orange peel.
- Redness or flaky skin in the ni**le area or on the breast.
- Ni**le retraction (turning inward) or pain in the ni**le area.
- Ni**le discharge other than breast milk, which may contain blood.
- A change in the size or shape of the breast.

What is Immunotherapy for Cancer?

Immunotherapy is a type of cancer treatment that uses the patient's own immune system to fight cancer cells. It works by boosting the immune system. Immunotherapy drugs, such as checkpoint inhibitors and cytokines, help the immune system recognize and attack cancer cells more effectively.

Targeting cancer cells:
Immunotherapy treatments can also target specific cancer cells, such as monoclonal antibodies that bind to cancer cell proteins and signal the immune system to destroy them.

Educating the immune system:
Vaccines and other immunotherapy treatments can teach the immune system to identify and attack cancer cells, even if they have not been detected before.
Immunotherapy can be used as a primary treatment for certain types of cancer, or as an adjunct therapy alongside other treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

It can help to:
Slow down cancer growth, Shrink tumors, and Improve survival rates.
Immunotherapy is not a cure for all cancers, but it can be an effective treatment for many patients. Side effects can vary depending on the type of immunotherapy used, but may include fatigue, flu-like symptoms, and skin rashes.

08/18/2025

By now you know we offer B12 injections.
But why? What are the benefits?

B12 injections are primarily used to address or prevent vitamin B12 deficiency, which can lead to fatigue, anemia, and nerve damage. They can also boost energy levels, improve cognitive function, enhance mood, and potentially aid in weight management for some individuals.

Here's a more detailed breakdown

1. Addressing Vitamin B12 Deficiency
Vitamin B12 is crucial for various bodily functions, including cell growth, nerve function, and red blood cell production.

Why injections are used
Some people cannot absorb B12 from their diet or have conditions that prevent absorption. Injections bypass the digestive system, ensuring the body receives the necessary B12.

Benefits
B12 injections can effectively treat symptoms of B12 deficiency, such as fatigue, weakness, numbness, and anemia, according to Cleveland Clinic Health Essentials.

2. Potential Benefits Beyond Deficiency
Increased Energy
B12 plays a role in energy production, so injections may help combat fatigue and boost overall energy levels.

Improved Brain Function
B12 is important for nerve health and cognitive function. Injections may improve memory, concentration, and overall mental clarity, says LiveVibrant Wellness and Aesthetics.

Mood Enhancement
Low B12 levels have been linked to mood changes, and injections may help improve mood and potentially alleviate symptoms of depression.

Metabolism and Weight Management
B12 is involved in fat and carbohydrate metabolism. While not a weight loss solution on its own, it may help the body process nutrients more efficiently.

Skin, Hair, and Nail Health
B12 is important for cell regeneration and repair, which can contribute to healthier skin, hair, and nails.

The benefits are incredible!
