We celebrated the end of CHATS (Communication Help for Adult Trauma Survivors) with the graduate students from Georgia Southern University Armstrong Campus Communication Sciences program this last Friday.

Throughout this semester, these students have been meeting with our Speak Easy group, and it has been a truly meaningful experience for everyone involved. Our members looked forward to each session and consistently shared how much they appreciated the students’ positive energy, thoughtful preparation, and the engaging information and activities they brought.

One of the final sessions included a joyful movement activity—admittedly something there were reservations about at first. It turned out to be a huge hit! Everyone in the room was laughing and smiling ear to ear. The activity absolutely lived up to its name. All of this feels especially meaningful with tomorrow being World Laughter Day and the beginning of Mental Health Awareness Month—and with May also recognized as National Stroke Awareness Month.

A huge thank you to Dr. April Garrity and all of the CHATS students for your time, care, and commitment to our group. And thank you to for joining us and capturing these moments so nicely.

Sunday was extra special at the Spring AMBUCS Amtryke giveaway 💙
One of our amazing clients received his very own Amtryke, and the joy on his face said it all. With the support of our OT, Heather, every step of the process was tailored just for him, making sure his new ride fits his needs and helps him thrive.
Moments like these are why we do what we do!

One day isn’t enough to celebrate Earth Day—we’ve been enjoying it all month! 🌎🌱

Check out our kids’ cool artwork and their growing pea garden 💚 These hands-on activities aren’t just fun—they’re excellent exercises for speech therapy and pediatric occupational therapy - building language, motor skills, and confidence along the way.

In 1898, Miller Reese Hutchinson introduced the first portable hearing aid—the Akouphone (from Greek: “to hear sound”). lt was a table top device that could amplify sound… but came with a catch: seriously bulky parts (headphones, batteries, amplifiers, microphones) and a hefty price tag that equates to nearly $14,000 today.

Today? Hearing technology is smaller, smarter, and more accessible than ever.

3… 2… 1… 🌋💥

They sound great, don't they??!!! Our Sound Start kids were ALL IN for the volcano countdown—and the eruption did not disappoint! Moments like this are more than just fun… they’re full of listening, language, and connection.

Watching these kids learn, laugh, and experience things together (especially alongside peers with hearing devices) is THE BEST!💛

Sound Start is offered at no cost to families thanks to your support. If you love seeing moments like this, you’re part of what makes them possible.

We’re so excited to support research from Sanskruti Deshpande, an MFA User Experience Design student at Savannah College of Art and Design that aims to improve everyday communication for individuals who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.

Ms. Deshpande is conducting a brief survey as part of her thesis work. Her goal is to better understand real-life communication experiences—what’s working, what isn’t, and where additional support is most needed.

The survey is brief and responses are confidential.

Happy Siblings Day 💛
At Sound Start, we don’t just support one child—we often walk alongside entire families. Watching siblings grow together, learning to listen, speak, and connect, is something truly special.

You can be part of stories like these. Your support helps ensure every child—and every family—has access to the early intervention they need to thrive.

We need your help 💛 Right now, our mission is growing—but so is the need. Every day, we serve children and adults who rely on us for speech, hearing, and rehabilitation services, and we never want cost to be the reason someone goes without care.
If you’ve seen the impact of our work at any point over these last 70+ years, or believe in what we do, we’re asking you to take a moment and give—whatever you can. Your donation directly supports therapy services, early intervention programs, and life-changing care for families in our community.
