🩷 Making a Difference This Breast Cancer Awareness Month 🩷

As a plastic surgeon specializing in breast reconstruction, I’ve seen firsthand how life-changing it can be for women to feel whole again after breast cancer.

This week, I donated my own hair to be turned into wigs for breast cancer survivors, a small but symbolic act to support the very patients I have the honor of caring for every day.

Huge thanks to Lydia Blackstone and WJCL 22 News for sharing this story and helping spread awareness during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. 🙏

I hope this inspires others in medicine and beyond to find creative ways to give back.

🔹 Above-Knee Amputation Revision with Targeted Muscle Reinnervation (TMR) 🔹

This patient suffered a traumatic above-knee amputation after an ATV accident, leaving them with chronic open wounds and debilitating phantom limb pain.

Dr. Buchanan revised the amputation site and performed targeted muscle reinnervation (TMR) a specialized nerve surgery designed to help reduce phantom pain and improve prosthetic control.

Thanks to this advanced technique, the patient is now healing well and on the road to improved comfort and function. 💪🏼

Limb Salvage Success: Radial Forearm Free Flap⁠

This patient suffered a severe open ankle fracture in a golf cart accident, with exposed bone and tendon, placing them at high risk for amputation.⁠
⁠
Instead of losing the limb, Dr. Buchanan used a radial forearm free flap to reconstruct the soft tissue defect and restore coverage over the exposed structures.⁠

Thanks to complex microsurgical reconstruction, the patient kept their limb and is now on the road to recovery.⁠
