September is Baby Safety Month, and with that MainStreet is dedicated to providing quality healthcare for children of all ages.
Here are a few tips and guidelines for safe practices for young children:
1. Safe Sleep Practices. Always place your baby on their back for every sleep, in a bare crib with no pillows, blankets, stuffed animals, etc. This drastically reduces chances of suffocation for young children.
2. Car Safety. Always make sure to use a car seat rated for your child's height, weight and age and ensure it is rear facing. Also, check the expiration date of any car seats you may use as they can become less effective over time. Additionally, never leave your child alone in a car, especially during any hotter months, as temperatures in vehicles can raise far past the outside temperature in a matter of minutes.
3. Water Safety. Drowning is one of the leading causes of accidental death in young children. Never leave your child unattended around any water source, including during bath time. Additionally, consider enrolling your child in swimming lessons as soon as they are old enough, as this can provide the foundation needed for children to have strong water survival skills throughout their life.
