Is it nerves, anxiety, or panic?
They can feel similar, but they’re not the same.
Nervousness
That short-term, situational stress we all feel sometimes.
Think: presentations, big events, meeting new people.
It’s manageable and usually fades once the moment passes.
“I was nervous before the speech, but once I started, I felt okay.”
Anxiety
A more constant state of worry that lingers, even when things are going well.
It often shows up as “what if” thoughts, a sense of losing control, or worrying about health, relationships, or the future.
It can start to interfere with daily life.
“I feel on edge most days, even when nothing is wrong.”
Panic
A sudden, intense surge of fear that peaks quickly and feels overwhelming.
It can come out of nowhere—or be triggered by thoughts or body sensations.
Often includes physical symptoms and a terrifying fear of dying or going crazy, followed by worry about it happening again.
“Out of nowhere, my heart raced, I couldn’t breathe, and I thought something terrible was happening.”
If you’ve ever wondered “what is this feeling?”—you’re not alone.
