Today is National System Administrator Appreciation Day and we’d like to send out a huge thanks to our Information Technology Team. Every single day David, Deirdre, and Neil make sure all aspects of our interconnected systems work efficiently and securely. Their skills, knowledge, and hard work allow Hospice of Southern Maine to deliver on its mission of providing compassion, care, and comfort at end of life. It goes with saying, but we'll say it anyway—our IT team is invaluable.

We recently came across this story of a family from Iowa who needed pediatric palliative care for their son. To receive the care he needed, the family had to drive roughly four hours to Minneapolis. As a legacy to their son, the family has taken on the initiative to establish a pediatric palliative care center in Iowa. Here at HSM, our ability to collaborate with MaineHealth System to provide case-by-case support for pediatric patients is something we’re grateful for—and stories like this remind us how important that connection is. You can read more about this family’s story here:

When it was time for 7-year-old Mason Sieck to start hospice care, there weren't many options for him in Iowa. Now, four years after his death, his family is working to build the state's first pediatric palliative care center.

We really enjoy these short, heartwarming stories called "My Unsung Hero" that you can hear on NPR occasionally. Here's a recent one about someone struggling with grief when a stranger's kind words made all the difference. Take a listen if you've got two minutes.

A few days after her sister died, Maureen was on the subway when a stranger asked how she was doing. The conversation that followed is one that she will forever cherish.
