An intriguing article about the connection between Epstein Barr Virus and MS. EBV, the virus that causes mono, can lay dormant in the body and reactivate due to stress and periods of immune suppression. We treat EBV extensively in our clinic and find that associated symptoms of fatigue, aches and pains, and cognitive dysfunction can respond dramatically to appropriate treatment.

Dear Friends, Stay Home. with
・・・
I just came off 3 nights at Maine Medical Center. I have my own PAPR that has to be reused despite being a disposable item. This is real, you aren’t immune, you aren’t special. Help us stay healthy by staying home. Our lives matter too. We need to take care of all our patients. I have gotten a total of 12 hours sleep in 4 days from anxiety and anger that people aren’t taking this seriously. Please please stay home for all of us.

If your doctor is relying on an Elisa followed by a western blot to diagnose Lyme, there’s a good chance you’ll end up with a false negative test. This new study shows the two tier testing system missed 70% of confirmed Lyme cases. This testing approach is particularly inaccurate in acute cases.

The study highlights the unreliability of current diagnostic testing for Lyme disease and underscores the need for more research.

Babesiosis is a chronic, persistent tick borne infection and relapses can occur months to years after the initial infection. This article in a well respected journal clearly states this. Chronic babesiosis is real and should be taken seriously. Those of you out there living with it know this fact well. In my clinical experience, babesia is the most difficult persistent tick borne infection to treat, often requiring several months of various types of treatment.

Persistent infection is a characteristic feature of babesiosis, a worldwide, emerging tick-borne disease caused by members of the genus Babesia. Persistence of Babesia infection in reservoir hosts increases the probability of survival and transmission of these pathogens. Laboratory tools to detect B...

What is SIBO and how is it related to IBS? SIBO stands for Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth and by some estimates is responsible for 80-90% of IBS. SIBO occurs often after a gastrointestinal infection, a course of antibiotics or a bout of constipation. Bacteria that should normally live in the large intestine migrate to the small intestine and cause a host of symptoms, including gas, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, reflux, abdominal pain, cramping, and even symptoms like fatigue, brain fog, and pain. SIBO is fully treatable and proper treatment can lead to complete resolution of symptoms.

Infection and autoimmune disease: what’s the connection? I’ve seen many patients with autoimmune disease that ended up testing positive for Lyme, babesia, bartonella, chronic viral infections, or other infectious diseases. With appropriate treatment, symptoms can improve dramatically. I’ve seen this with rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile RA, lupus, reactive arthritis, and other autoimmune diseases. As the immune system is trying to fight the infection, there’s always collateral damage, whether it’s to the joints, brain, or other vital organs. Finally treating underlying infection lessens the immune response and the autoimmune disease improves. If you are concerned about an existing autoimmune diagnosis and feel something else is at play feel free to call us at 207-396-1440 for a consult or to schedule an appointment.

Tick borne infections are a major public health crisis, especially here in New England. I’m happy to see that our Maine senators are fighting the good fight at the federal level for funding. This money will help with advancements in prevention, testing, and treatment.

The proposal, co-sponsored by Sen. Angus King and others, would award grants to states to combat Lyme disease, collect data and improve treatment.

Ticks are out and active! Ticks carrying infection survive the harsh winter, but are insulated under layers of snow and leaf litter. They’re there waiting for the snow to thaw. We’ve been getting numerous calls from patients with tick bites. If you have an attached tick, regardless of how long it’s been attached, get it tested. The CDC acknowledges that co-infections can be transmitted in minutes and they’re coming around with Lyme disease. A few of my favorite labs are the U Maine Coop Extension, Ticknology.org, and tickreport.com. It’s also good to start prophylactic treatment until the results return. Get your ticks tested!
