Can chiropractic be used to treat pelvic floor dysfunction in women?

As we discussed in our last post, pelvic floor dysfunction is a common cause of urinary incontinence in pregnant and post-partum patients. Many techniques have been observed to treat pelvic floor dysfunction such as physiotherapy, at-home exercises, and acupuncture.

A study conducted observed the effects of spinal manipulation on pelvic floor muscle function in women in their second trimester of pregnancy. It was shown by manipulating the spine in the lumbar and SI regions that the pelvic floor muscles appeared more relaxed by observing an increase in the levator hiatal area via ultrasound. These results were only seen in pregnant women.
