Our "big toes" (hallux) are exposed to more stress than the lesser toes. Eighty percent of our foot's push-off power is through the hallux.

The hallux must bend upward as your foot rolls off the ground (dorsiflex). When it can not, the joint (1st metatarsal joint (MPJ) jambs, significantly increasing stress across the joint causing pain. Ignoring the pain will accelerate joint damage, leading to Hallux limitus or end-stage Hallux rigidus.

It's essential to be evaluated by a podiatrist before irreversible joint damage occurs.

Doctors of Podiatric Medicine (DPM) have completed a four-year podiatric medicine education and a three-year podiatric medicine and surgery residency. No other healthcare specialty comes close to a DPM's knowledge of foot and ankle.

Podiatrists treat skin, nails, bunions, hammertoes, sprains, and foot and ankle fractures.

We are licensed to write prescriptions.

DPMs thoroughly understand the functional medicine (podiatric biomechanics) of the foot, ankle, and leg and its effects on the knee, hip, and lower back. DPMs also understand the abnormal function of the foot and ankle and the appropriate use of prescription functional orthotics to correct these conditions.

Doctors of Podiatric Medicine are America's foot doctors.

Use Extra Caution When Operating a Power Lawnmower. The blades spin at 3,000 revolutions per minute. Follow these precautions:
1) Wear sturdy work boots or shoes.
2) Don't mow on wet grass. It is too easy to slip.
3) Your mower should stop when you release the handle. If yours does not, consider replacing it.
4) Do not mow if children are playing in the yard. They are a distraction.
5) If you have a riding mower, keep your child from riding in your lap.

Check your running shoes. If the outside back of the heel is worn, it can lead to a lateral ankle sprain.

When looking for new running shoes, look for a shoe labeled "Stability." It will provide side-to-side stability at the heel. Avoid zero-drop shoes, which can cause Achilles tendinitis. Also, avoid lightweight shoes. They are not made to be supportive or stable.
