When the bunion is this bad it not only makes it harder and more involved to correct, but we unfortunately have to ask the patient to use a knee scooter or crutches for around 3 weeks. If there is surgery there is swelling! It isn’t always a bad thing. It is part of the normal healing process after having foot surgery. We help our patients manage it with anti inflammatories, instructing them to ice and elevate, PRP, and laser therapy. It is their job to stay off their foot as much as possible! Swelling is the body’s natural inflammatory response to surgery, and a necessary evil. If a foot swells a lot like the one above it might be uncomfortable, but it’s not necessarily a bad sign. With some time and patience the foot will deflate into the beautiful result we are looking for.

Can you believe this patient looked this good three months after having BOTH sides of her feet fixed?! I can’t either. Patients like her are allowed to weight bear immediately and can return to full activity as soon as 8 weeks. In general the cosmetic result takes 6 months to a year but some genetically people get to look this good much faster.

Split toes is usually caused by injury to the plantar plate. The plantar plate is a ligament that runs on the bottom of the toe that can tear and rupture from injury or overuse. Some surgeons elect to repair the plantar plate, some surgeons shorten the second metatarsal, and some do both to correct the problem. On most occasions we are able to get the correction we need and patient satisfaction from shortening the second metatarsal alone. Pain in the ball of the foot without splitting of the toes is usually referred to as metatarsalgia, and corrected in the same way. Morton’s neuroma can also cause pain in the ball of the foot, and can occur at the same time as these other issues.

If you’ve had surgery with us there’s a good chance you met Dan and got to experience the most wonderful nap you can get 😴. He worked with my Dad for 40 years and with me 10, but he’s always been a part of my life. He taught me about Bob Seger and Steely Dan, and I taught him about Travis Scott and hot girl summer 😂. Yesterday was his last day with us as moves on to retire!! I know I’ll keep seeing him, but we are all a bit emotional that he won’t regularly be a big part of our weeks anymore. So I wanted to give him a shout out and say WE WILL MISS YOU DAN!!♥️♥️
