July 1st marks the the first day of intern year for young physicians all around the USA. It’s sort of momentous day - you are allowed the privilege of a “real” white coat and have just completed 4 rigorous years of med school, passed at least two board exams, and spent countless hours in travel and in interviews to gain a residency spot. It makes the beginning of residency. Residency is the next phase of training for American physicians. It can last from 3 - 6 years.
My first day was 17 years ago. It was the start of a four year residency program. I remember shaking as I donned my white coat and showing up for morning rounds with my Senior resident. I remember my first patient. I remember feeling so grateful for the opportunity. I still am. Becoming a physician is commiting to lifelong learning. Commending all those who are courageous enough to make the commitment. God bless and good luck!
