To help patients breathe during surgery, the first version of intubation was introduced by a surgeon over 100 years ago.

Since then, anesthesiologists have advanced airway management, developing specialized breathing tubes to help maintain critical breathing functions.

These advances enable more complex surgeries and reduce the risk of complications and death.

Often cited as the most important medical advance in history.

October 16, 1846, Massachusetts General Hospital: the first public demonstration of painless surgery. Privately, anesthesiologist Dr. Crawford Long had used ether in surgery since 1842.
Before anesthesia, surgery was rare and typically reserved for emergencies.

Anesthesiologists pioneered anesthesia and continue to refine it, making it even safer and recovery faster.
